What did you cook/eat today (June 2017)

I guess I shouldn't mention all of the other "ethnic" markets that I can visit on the way into or out of work. Korean, Italian, Indian, Turkish, African, South American, Mexican, etc..

Last night's sashimi and a spicy tuna roll:

That looks fabulous. I'm not a particular fan of sushi (well that is what the spicy tuna roll looks like) but your photos made it look wonderful. Sashimi I really love. So is this just 'take out' food?

This is what I had while making the soup I just posted: pastrami and Swiss with asparagus on homemade rye, pan cooked with a compound butter (a blend of garlic, oregano, and butter). I probably should have waited until the soup was done so I could have them together, but seriously: how was I supposed to resist this?

Delicious .. Reminded me of my 1st trip to Nyc where we went to Katz´s Deli and I had a Ruben !

Have a lovely day ..

Due to hubby coming home from work early yesterday, the roast was put off until today.
We made messy tacos instead. Corn tortillas, taco meat, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, shredded Mexican cheese and I had sour cream. The dog had his taco without onions.

It's too long time that I don't eat Mexican tacos..I really like them. From these parts there are no places to pick them up...

We just make our own. We don't hard fry the shells but just heat up corn tortillas.
Corn tortillas are simple to make, but I'm not sure whether there's masa harina (corn flour) in Italy. The good news is that anyone can make flour tortillas with all purpose flour; here's my recipe:

I add a lot of extra things that you technically don't need, so feel free to remove the cumin, cilantro, lime juice, and flax seed if you want. Once you have a tortilla, you just need to put some vegetables and sauce in it to make it a taco. Some would also say that it needs some sort of dairy product, but with such a wide range of things that are now called a taco these days (Asian tacos in particular), I don't think that's essential.

Thank you! I'm intrigued to prepare it but much more to eat it. Last time I've eaten tortillas was in a mexican restaurant in Milano, but I haven't had any other occasions to come back. Homemade tortillas could be a new experience. Yes we have corn flour in Italy.

Light butter?
Your recipe looks good if a bit fancy. Sounds good too come winter.

I can and have made tortillas. Even have the press and tortilla holders.
Here is the thing: at $1.88 for 30 corn tortillas (made in Texas) or $1.99 for a dozen locally made (in store) flour tortillas, why would I put the big cast iron griddle on the stove in the summer?
Corn tortillas are super easy if you can get the masa de maiz. Note: Amazon sells it, if your local grocery store doesn't carry it. If you can, get it off the ethnic aisle, not the Quaker brand in the flour section. (Major cost difference. )

Oh, I know...I used to be a purist about everything - I have to make everything myself! - but I've since realized that there aren't enough hours in the day sometimes. I do sometimes make tortillas, but usually not (Mexican Town in Detroit is superb for high quality tortillas from people who know what they're doing).

You have Mexicans? The only thing I know about Detroit is it is home to automobiles, Motown and those people that were on the History Channel for a bit. (Sure made me want to visit your fine city. Not.)

Lol, do you mean the show Hardcore Pawn?
Your first clue?
That made the top 4 of worst history channel shows ever.
The 4th one was Black Gold or whatever that oilfield show was called.
I think it got pulled because the companies got tired of fines from OSHA.

Is it ground corn or cornflour like in the UK?
If it is the thickener, that will not work.
You need something like the first two shown here.
https://www.walmart.com/c/kp/corn-flour
The next one is for making cornbread and the fourth one is the thickener which is referred to as cornflour in the UK.
