What did you cook/eat today (October 2017)?

Are you experiencing the strange yellow light where you are, @Elawin. It began yesterday as a result of the hurricane carrying sahara dust and blotting out the sun. Its very strange... rather like just before a solar eclipse. I think it has affected birds.
Yesterday was weird. I had a hospital appointment at lunch time, and when I came home it was still brilliant sunshine. By the time I got home at 3 p.m., the sky was very dark yellow, but with grey and white storm clouds as well. I'd only been in about half an hour when it got pitch dark and I had to put the lights on. Today looks like it's going to turn out the same. The sky is a very funny colour. My "resident" robins have been pecking around at the food I've put out for them yesterday and just now, but I haven't seen any other birds at all.
P.S. Not yet 2 p.m. and I've already got my lights on!

The light has suddenly come back! Its 1.54pm and the sun is breaking through. It should be clearing your way soon.

This sounds and looks most interesting.
This is a flavor combination I credit to Niki Segnit, the author of The Flavor Thesaurus. I was looking at different combinations involving coconut, and many of them made some sense: I've heard of coconut chicken, I've had coconut shrimp, and I can understand the small step from there to coconut beef. But, coconut and beets blew me away: these are two things I'd never think of putting together. Unlike other combinations of sweet-ish ingredients, I avoided all sugar. I can't remember if she listed a samosa as a vehicle, but this is where I ended up. It was a ridiculous amount of work the way I did it, but it was time well-spent.

Tonight's dinner was a quick and easy stir fry of onion, carrots, mushrooms, garlic, red and orange peppers, chillies, and cime di rapa (stalks and leaves), with a touch of Chinese 5 spice mix and a splash of soy sauce, served up on a bed of plain steamed rice.

Our weather was chilly, so I made chili! Hubby will eat chili when it's hot weather, too, but I just can't. I try to make it as son as the the cold weather moves in. It did last night, and got only into the low 50s today for the high (11c). A bowl of chili with cheddar cheese, veggie cups for each of us (I put the dipping dressing in the bottom, then stand the crudites up in the cup), and "soup and oyster crackers" to nibble between spoonfuls of chili. Tuesday evening is our big TV night, so we ate in the living room off of our lap trays.

Our temperatures are cooling a little now (27 degC today). I still have beef suet in the freezer and 500 gms of cubed topside so beef stew and suet dumplings are on the horizon.
