What did you cook or eat today (January 2024)?

I tried these taco things when they first arrived on our shores and decided I did not like them but that was decades ago so time to give them another go!

It’s not the flavour combos, they’re great 👍
It’s the impracticality of the vessel‘s.
I don’t mind messy food but crisps that fall apart and force the contents to spill, it’s daft.

Yeah, I don't particularly like them either. I prefer flour tortillas, but if I do get corn, which is what the above are, I prefer to make my own or buy freshly made ones that are grilled on a flat surface. They aren't crispy like the above but do have a similar taste. Alternatively, if you want the crunch without it falling apart, you can wrap the crunchy one with a steamed or grilled corn or flour tortilla. The crunchy one will still break, but it won't fall apart due to the outer wrapper.

Don't use hard taco shells. Those things are terrible to eat. They crumble to pieces. Mexican and TexMex restaurants here use soft tortillas, either corn or flour. Your best bet in the UK would be flour, as corn tortillas need to be very fresh, as in made today fresh.

Here are some from my favorite Mexican Cantina. They are in corn tortillas. It is fairly common to double them up for extra strength. It depends on how fresh the tortillas are.

Limp tacos? Those are soft tacos, available in flour or corn. Soft tortillas are more common in Mexico and Texas for tacos.

Yes soft tacos is what I meant "Floppy" and "wilted" were the other options that crossed my mind

I‘m aware of the usual soft taco options, they are something I eat more often than I want to owing to them taking up little space on a motorbike. Hence trying out these crispy ones again which I still don’t like.

After the first one I broke them in half and piled bit’s on food on the top using them like a big cracker, it was ok, the flavours were great, but I won’t be bothering with them again. I’ll stick with the soft version!

I like the idea of doubling them up for strength!

edit: I re-read my original post and realise I should have been more specific that it was the shells I was trying again, not Taco’s full stop. I think that because here we call the crispy things tacos and whole thing something else entirely - Tortillas.

We call all sorts of things Tortillas. It’s almost impossible to say “tortilla“ without then having to embark on a lengthy explanation of what sort of tortilla you’re talking about 😆

I used to make tons of the "egg cake" tortillas when I was a teenager... Flipping them off the skillet was a lot of fun..and a lot of disaster too sometimes

It’s not something I ever mastered. They were/still are something I buy as fast picnic food instead of making a sandwich.
Maybe it’s something I should have a look into, the ones in Spain are a lot nicer than the little vacuum packed discs you can buy in the UK!

I love Spanish tortillas, but most people here refer to them as Spanish omelets. Tortilla has just one meaning for most people here.

I always marveled at how my MIL could butcher that word:

“And for you, ma’am?”
“I’ll have the flour tor…tortill…tortee…tortle…well shoot…tor-TILL-yah taco plate, please.”

I feel like that reading abbreviations in English at work... because...confession time.. I never really learned the English alphabet, most letters I can't spell them in English. So there I am trying to say stuff like CISO... IAM...SaaS...I just say the entire words
