What did you cook or eat today (January 2025)

I had to go and get new front tyres for the car, so on the way back I popped into a new supermarket that opened about 2-3 weeks ago. Right on the top of a hill and a glorious view of the city.
There's a bakery there called Rosita - a Portuguese bakery which has been around for over 50 years, but now the kids have taken over and the place is thriving.
A "marrón grande" (large, strong coffee with milk) and 2 pasteis de nata ( a flaky pastry base with creamy, vanilla custard inside).
I could probably have eaten a dozen!

So Barriehie, you and SSOAP are flying to Caracas?

Hah! Wiped me out driving 80 miles for curry paste!

Edit: I don't do airports anymore. TSA is a null event in my book.
Well I guess you had better buy a boat, then?

Flying isn't nearly as fun as it once was, but I like to go a lot farther than I can drive on a regular basis so I do it.

I liked getting on planes like it was in the 70's...
I didn't love the smoking on the planes, though. I remember the old DC 10s still had ashtrays back in the early 2000s, glad they phased those old beasts out although I am not real keen on Boeing's mechanical woes as of late.

My dad was an AF pilot BTW so I got lots of flying in at an early age, plus we moved to Okinawa for a couple of years when I was young--can't really drive there and back, LOL!

SandwichShortOfAPicnic it seems to me that's the second, maybe third time that you've made your version of that Shrimp & Cuc Salad... I haven't made that in a while.
(edit - what changes did you make?)
It’s the second, tomorrow will be the third. There’s something refreshing and light about it. Tastes like you’re being both nice to yourself and good at the same time.

I use a fair amount more cucumber (over double) so I increase the intensity making it more robust to cover that extra cucumber flavour wise.
More lime, dill, garlic, mustard, a splash of chilli sauce or some white pepper for heat, fish sauce to help the bolster the flavour of the prawn, soy sauce as the salt component and a pinch or two of sugar.

Basically sticking to the hot sour sweet principle but perhaps unami’d up a weeny bit.

Your recipe is lovely, I like it as is. It’s just I’m a cucumber fiend and Mr SSOAP likes strong flavours!

I particularly like that your dressing has some substance to it, a lot of cucumber dressings are quite watery.
It means you can have just that dish with some crusty bread and be satisfied 😊
It makes a lovely (if saucy) sandwich too.

Mr SSOAP and I flew on a plane last year that had an ashtray in the arm rests. We stared at each other because we both thought BL**DY HELL HOW OLD IS THIS PLANE?
It’s not like you can check the number plate and read the last MOT report is it?! 😂
