When you say chef's salad, do you mean a salad using whatever happens to be left over/needing using up?
Possibly means what we call a chef's salad here - the usual salad suspects (lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, onion), but featuring cold cuts (ham and turkey), and hard-boiled egg.

Yes, I believe the Cobb salad came about the same way.

I was thinking that the Cobb salad was created at a famous restaurant, and named after someone (like the Bananas Foster story). It was -- the Brown Derby in Hollywood. The restaurant owner was Robert Howard Cobb. There are conflicting stories about HOW that salad came to exist, but both stories happened in that restaurant.

The original Brown Derby in LA was famous for something else -- it's architecture...

We were visiting friends for lunch so only wanted something light tonight. Heinz Tomato soup with a ham and red onion sandwich. There were other things going on like red onion, pickled beetroot and mustard but really it was just about the soup. Heinz tomato is probably the only tinned soup I will entertain.

Tonight, I made MypinchofItaly's bread soup, which she shared here:

Recipe - Pappa al Pomodoro - Bread & Tomato Soup from Tuscany

I've made this once before, from a different recipe, and liked it (to my surprise and delight); and Pinch's is just as good, probably better (I can't remember that far back :)) - either way, this is good!

I did want to mention, I used the last of my olive oil herb loaf for this. Seemed a fitting end.
