Chopped steak/hamburger steak - here, it’s usually flavored up a little bit, like maybe with a packet of dried onion soup mix worked in there, a splash of Worcestershire sauce…it’s a step up from a plain hamburger patty, but not much.
When I was a teenager, we’d go to my mom’s most favorite restaurant of all…Bonanza, which was sort of a combination steakhouse and cafeteria - you’d order your steak first, then push through the line, selecting your bread, desserts, drink, pay at the end, go sit down, and a few minutes later, your steak would arrive.
I was only ever allowed to order the chopped steak, because it was the cheapest. My mom would say, “Now Tasty, you get whatever you want. If you want that ribeye, you go ahead and get it.”
I’d tell the order taker, “Yes, I’d like the rib-“ and at that point, my dad, completely out of sight of my mom, who’d moved on ahead, would smack the living crap out of the back of my head, and he’d tell the woman, “The boy’ll have the chopped steak…no toppings!” - you could get mushroom gravy, fried onions, things like that for maybe 25 cents more…but not me!
