I can still remember my first visit to the US of A. We travelled to over 20 different locations , from the East coast to the Twin Cities, so had a fair look at the "cuisine". Dr Pepper, Root Beer and Sasparilla were all considered foul and disgusting. However, the sandwiches (Reuben, BLT, Subs, Club, etc.) had us all drooling. Having been brung up on egg & cress or cheese & pickle, in pasty white sandwich bread, a submarine sandwich with salami, ham, cheese, mortadella, more cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, etc, etc, etc was a thing of delight. And the 4" thick Reuben sandwiches we had in New York - wow. Did someone say " RYE BREAD"??? Oh boy!!
Don´t even get me going on the pizza slices in NY...

Yay-got my first vacation on the books for this year.

Not doing anything, but MrsT has a week-long conference on a cruise ship bobbing around the Caribbean the last of Feb/first of Mar, and whenever she does that, I always take a few days off, just to de-stress from everything, watch deviant European schlock movies, eat pizza all day.

I've just been looking at a cruise too. Take one of the Cunard Queens from Southampton to New York, spend four days there and fly home. Could be lush.

My sister takes two cruises per year. She has not done a Trans-Atlantic cruise. I think that would be enjoyable -- just watch out for those icebergs.

Around four days in NYC is something I do just about every year (well, before Covid). Just don't stay in/near Times Square (tourist trap).

BTW, before coming to NYC, do some research. Listen to Johnny T...

We do have a Norway cruise already booked for 2024 (covid do-over), and we’re expecting to do one this year, we just don’t know what yet. MrsT also has a Disney cruise booked for herself and a friend at the end of the year.

One of our very favourite journeys by ferry was on the Hurtigruten ferries up the far north coast of Norway. It was amazing and because it was above the Arctic circle and inside those 3 months, it was 24hr daylight which just meant we saw more of that amazing scenery.

There's a glacier in that photo.

After we got off the ferry at 11:30pm at night we had to locate a campsite

On the way out the following morning.

We were really lucky because the ferry we got onto by chance that day was one of the original ferries the old M/S Lofoten which I believe has been taken out of service now. But it was kitted out in fantastic luxury in true 1960's style. It reminded us of the original James Bond films, plus you were able to go into the lowest levels on the outside almost at water level and on top of that, they allowed you to go up to the outside bridge area except for when docking. I'd been there for quite some time by myself when the captain came out to chat to me offering me a hot cup of coffee or tea!

This is a link to that specific day in our online journal.

We also did another section of over the top of Norway on one of the newer ferries. Again the scenery was stunning. Neither of us liked the new ship. It was a ship and could have been any ship whereas the first M/S Lofoten.

We've also done a couple of cruises from UK to Norway over the years, but they are all film & paper photos. Leaving Newcastle Upon Tyne and heading into Bergen.

Edit to add M/S Lofoten is still in service, it is the sister ship that was retired in 2012. We did actually meet the sister ship on that journey.

Edited again, to add that she's no longer in service with the Hurtigruten, but as a training ship out of Kristiansund, Norway.

Do you need to be British to appreciate this? Or is it the same world over?

No, that works here as well. I always get aggravated with docs because they all have notices up that say you’ll be charged for your appointment if you’re a no-show or cancel inside a 24-hour window, yet I’ll have a 10:30AM appointment, and I’ll be lucky to be seen by noon. I always want to hand them a bill for my hourly wage when they’re late like that.
