I am actually amazed at how many words and phrases dogs can learn. You have to be consistent, but my dogs, including psycho-poodle, have been able to understand a lot of words and phrases.

I have no idea how many words and phrases cats understand. It wouldn't matter, since cats wouldn't care what we said to them.

Exactly. My cats used to come when called as kittens and young cats, have had them since birth as their mom was my dad's cat. Now, the female only comes if she feels like it. The male comes more often than not, but he's not exactly the brightest light bulb in the box.

I think the "experts" did a study and determined that dogs can understand basically the equivalent of a 3ish year old toddler.

My daughter had a King Charles spaniel called smudge. I always have peppermints on me and she loved them. I taught her tricks my daughter couldn't believe. Kcs are known to be dumb dogs. But not smudge.

When daughter moved out as a teen I inherited her cat Minnie. She would wait for me at night as I got home at 5ish, always at front door. She followed me everywhere until we went to bed. Sat next to me on the couch. She was very intelligent. Had to put her down at about 17yo, lost all her faculties. Vet bills were in the thousands keeping her alive.
I think that's why we've never had pets since?

Spaniels in general are not typically "gifted" mentally. Very pretty dogs, but not very bright. My sister had a cocker spaniel. Beautiful dog, dumb as a stump.

Smudge could on demand ( for a lolly)
Sit
Lie
Roll over
Bark
Shake hands
Play dead.

I used to know a guy that bred kcs because he got repeat customers as they always got run over. Because they were thick!
