Got the word that there had been good catches of Dover Sole last night, I bought 3kg of assorted size fish. These two are Sunday night and will mature in the fridge. The rest are in the freezer. I payed just over £12 a kg. I looked online in the UK, they are between £40/50 a kg.

The rest was fruit veg and cheese. The egg man is delivering this afternoon.

Trip to a smallish grocery in the local city.

Bought:

Butternut squash
Hangar steak
Country style pork ribs (my favorite cut)
Wild caught shrimp
Artichokes (2)
Fresh Fettuccini
Blood orange
Grape tomatoes
Fresh mozzarella
Baby bella mushrooms.
Montanara cheese with herbs
Smoked Gouda
Pancetta
Organic eggs - my hens are on their winter slowdown.
Balsamic reduction
Half loaf of a bakery style bread chock full of seeds and whole grains - and it feels soft and appetizing.

Pre-made stuff:
1 largish serving Kugel noodle dish with apple.
8 piece tuna or salmon sushi roll with avocado wrap - already eaten.
2 servings pre-made spanikopita - heating up oven for one of them

I couldn't find a couple things I need (whole turmeric - can't guess why...., turkey thighs, heavy duty trash bags - and now it appears aluminum foil), so I will hit the regular supermarket for them tomorrow - they open at 7 am and I will be there about then. Earlier this week I got a produce delivery from Misfits Market - a US-only (mostly eastern half) supplier of veggies and fruit: lemons, onions, Napa cabbage, lettuce, mini-cukes, avocadoes, bok choy, string beans. I get a box every other week, and I have some say in what I get.

I actually lived in Cincy for two years as a kid. I would have been around 12-13 years old. It is a nice place -- if you are a kid. Of course, the time I lived there was punctuated by a F5 tornado that wiped out half of my town, so not all of my memories are fond ones. But, I did my first wilderness campout there at age 12. I hiked for miles with a backpack, learned to start a fire without matches, and cook on that fire with fish that we caught and greens that we gathered. Then, froze my a$$ off at night because my dad bought my camping gear, which was the cheapest camping gear on the planet.

Back on topic, I got my first "taste" of cooking good food with simple ingredients from that camping experience. I still sometimes shop that way, and cook that way. A good piece of meat, a potato, and a few simple veggies.

So MG, if you come to the US for just a week, I would skip Cincinnati. If you come here for six months, yeah, spend a week there one day.

BTW! If you only have one week in the US, I would skip Dallas, too. There is some history, and a lot of good food, but otherwise, it is a city full of big corporations and "bedroom communities.)

Today's shopping: I don't usually go one day after the other but... with the increase in COVID in that city, I wanted to hit the supermarket closer to 6 am (the start of THEIR senior hour) - I got there at 6:45.

Sadly, no fresh turmeric, which spoils that plan, but I do have plenty of the powdered. (I was hoping for a finely grated garnish on a recipe...)

Purchased:

Turkey thighs for the tamales
Heavy cream, for some ideas down the near road.
Gruyere cheese, ditto.
Smoked salmon - momentary splurge.
Aluminum foil (I'm out)
Small zip lock baggies (I'm out)
Paper towels (nearly out)
Baby aspirin (I'm out)
Hand sanitizer - wow, I found some that doesn't stench like ammonia or chlorine!
A buttload of D and C batteries (the pricy part of my cart) so I can put up ALL the battery operated outdoor lights this weekend, AND have some left over for the mouse zapper contraptions.. Tossed in a smoke detector battery because one never knows...

I don't believe I will need to go back to that city until the New Year, except for a visit to pick up cat prescriptions, and a visit to Tractor Supply for quail feed (which is almost next door to the vet's).

On the subject of quaffable Italian bottles, I found this in the pantry today. Only a couple of centimetres left in the bottle, but really lifted a sauce for Sunday lunch:

Nice! I use a lot Marsala mostly for .... guess? Marsala chicken 😅, but I usually prefer the dry version instead of the sweet one.

Tractor Supply Company is a unique place. Part hardware store, part feed store -- part rat habitat. They are all over Texas.

I bought some ground pork, some lettuce, bread and a fresh bottle of organic ground turmeric today. I can't find fresh turmeric around here, either. I'm still undecided about an entry in the turmeric challenge.

Do you have any Asian markets near you?

You can get it on Amazon USA (I did a quick search) but not sure if the price isn't a bit high.

I do have an Asian market here in Frisco. I don't have a lot of time this week. Maybe I can get there.
