What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2024)?

I do, do real Indian food sometimes but I also like the Brit versions too.. running for cover šŸ˜‚
Brit versions are absolutely fine. There is a bit of the myth that Indan restaurant dishes in the UK aren't 'authentic'. Many of them are but they tend to origiinate from certain areas of India based on the where the family came from.

However, there is the other Brit version which you will find in English cookery books during and after the Raj. Those recipes are very different.

Nothing wrong with Brit versions, as MG says. I was brought up on them - the Curry Inn in Maidstone High St was a Friday night fix. Bombay potatoes, prawn Madras and onion bhajis!

MrsT came back with these provisions:

Thatā€™s whatā€™s left of the minibar setup from her cruise.

Then thereā€™re these:

She also brought back that Mamajuana stuff - some kind of rum and wine mixture, and there are loads of flavorings crammed in there, like star anise and cinnamon. Apparently, once you drink it, you can refill it with more rum and wine, and itā€™s good for a second bottle. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

The other two are my purchases. Itā€™s funny how different boozes seem to have their moment - a few years ago, Hendricks gin was everywhere, and nowadays, Heering is on every fancy cocktail menu.

Ooh aphrodisiac, now thatā€™s a message in on a bottle šŸ˜‚

Hmm Iā€™d like to try it but perhaps one without this bit -

ā€œSome recipes are said to include grated tortoiseshell,[3] or sea turtle penis shaft for aphrodisiac effect.ā€
Iā€™ve had another look in that bottle, and one of the cinnamon sticks looks decidedlyā€¦fleshy.

I like how another article said itā€™s referred to as ā€œthe stick lifterā€ in the local parlance.

If anything was gonna turn me vegan the thought of lopping off turtle penisā€™ to make a drink could do it šŸ¤¢

Is that etc for ā€œet cetera,ā€ or is it for ā€œexcellent turtle c***?!ā€ - either way, Iā€™m troubled.
Donā€™t think that would get past the labelling laws here šŸ˜‚
Imagine if you could just write etc on the packaging, theyā€™d use it all the time šŸ˜†
Cayenne pepper ā€˜contains pepper and etcā€™ aka brick dust lolšŸ¤£

I just got a new stash of this favorite of ours
