What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2024)?

I’ve NEVER kept my Furikake in the refrigerator!!
Don't know whether it's just my appreciation, but almost ALL foods I've bought in the States say "refrigerate after opening". Perhaps it's just the FDA being ultra careful.
I don't see any reason at all to put something that has sugar AND salt in the fridge.
I don't put jam, chutney or hot sauces in the fridge, nor pickles, gherkins or eggs, and the only reason butter gets refrigerated is that it would melt in the tropical heat outside.
As for the warning; I get the same thing on mustard oil. "For external use only", when it's actually the most divine thing with potato and spinach curry!

I think the main reason so many things here say to refrigerate after opening is just to extend the life of what the maker sees as their optimal taste/quality.

M&M’s for Halloween - we have to have something to give to the kids who never show up. The Hershey Miniatures we had have somehow disappeared… :whistling:

Can’t wait to try Aldi’s Christmas beer!

Oranges mean mulled cider at some point soon.

I can’t remember when exactly they realised that refrigerating products increased sales but it was around that time that suddenly things that had never needed to be refrigerated before suddenly had ‘Keep Refrigerated’ slapped on them.

It’s simply that if it’s kept in the fridge you see it more frequently and use it more.

On another ‘must be kept refrigerated after opening’ note they also discovered that fridged items are generally viewed as fresher and better for you so some items that are presented in the chiller cabinets technically don’t need to be in there.

Anyone in the UK remember an orange drink called ‘Sunny Delight’ or Sunny D’?
It contained more sugar than Coca Cola and it was long life but they stuck it in the fridge section and it became a behemoth brand for a short period - short lived in the UK because the dental association and the press went after it for it’s false advertising, amongst other things it obtained hardly any vitamin D 😂

There is a problem with mustard oil. It's widely used in India as you know but has health issues . I can't recall exactly what but I do think it's a real concern rather than a fad. I can buy one here in the UK for human consumption but it is mixed with vegetable oil so that it is 'safe'. I need to look up what the issue is. I researched it once before but have forgotten...

Adding to my own post. The problem is euric acid which is found in high levels in mustard oil. From reading a bit about it, it seems that the affects on the heart have been found in animals but haven't been proven in humans.

TastyReuben I found clotted cream for my mom once at the green grocer believe it or not, but haven't made her Scones again for some time now.
[as she kicks herself] really should make some...
The dough freezes really well. I used to make small batches, just four, until I figured out I could freeze the dough and just bake one or two at a time from frozen…so make a big batch, cut them out, then freeze them! 🤓

I do the exact opposite. Scones freeze really well... so I cook a double batch (16) using the oven once and then just defrost them as desired.
