What's going on in your garden (2024)?

I raided the veg plot.

Almost all of my garlic is up! I'll have a good head start next year on large bulbs, I hope.

you're lucky. over here if the native birds can see that, they will destroy it in seconds. I have to keep all of my veg plot covered and fenced in to stop them eating or just ripping it up and destroying everything.

Like satnav I'm picking 28 deg c here today
50 raspberries

I'm still getting strawberries. I did spot that my raspberries are starting to colour and plump up. We're due a wet weekend which will help considerably and then I think both sets of raspberries will be cropping heavily - more than last year from what I can tell and I was taking 1kg almost 3 times a week at the height of the season.

The deer are the pests here. We have a new outside dog, Ozzie, and he's pretty much kept the critters away. I've taught him to "run the edges" and he'll run along the grassed boundaries and a bit into the woods too and do that several times a day.

used to deer. When I lived in Scotland, they would frequently raid the bins unless the bin lid had a brick or rock on it. In the lake district, the only thing we could do with the bins was to keep them in an outhouse. In Surrey, we had to keep the veg plot fenced in as well as the fruit trees that we planted because the deer would eat the leaves and bark and kill them otherwise. We also get various species of deer here. They're an introduced species and also a pest. We have red deer where we live, but they are far less of a problem than the kangaroos and wallabies.

Never been to Australia but there seems to be *lots* of critters with all kinds of abilities down there!
We'd never been here either until we stepped off the plane to live here for 3 years.

Yes, there is lots that can kill you, but most of the time it doesn't want to kill you. With a little common sense it won't kill you either.

Slightly off topic, but I do remember watching Steve Irwin (RIP) tracking down the 10 most venomous snakes in Australia. He was actually face to face with an Eastern brown snake, possibly the 2nd deadliest in the world. Scary.
Snakes, however, will generally avoid conflict and run away, rather than confront, because humans are not considered prey.

This afternoon TVC mowed the front lawn whilst I cut back dead stuff and collected some seeds. We have put some lights up outside but he isn't 100% better so no more today.
