How is the corona virus affecting you?

We're now at 43% fully vacc'd in my county - that took 27 days to get there from 42%.

What really gets me...the two lowest groups for vaccinations are also the two oldest group, 75-79 and 80 and over. You'd think they'd be more likely to get the shot(s), but nope, they're the least likely here.

I see the coverage of what's going on in Europe and the North America and then I compare it to what's going on here in Japan... The statistic on the news here is something like 90% + of the people who died of Covid were over 70 and those who were hospitalized have mostly over 50 and had co-morbidities. Zero deaths from people under 20 and very few under 50 unless they lead a workaholic lifestyle.

From the beginning, it seems to me the main factors determining outcome are age and the person's health condition. I wish I'd see more from the media about getting into shape and eating 'right' as a preventative for Covid.

So for me, Covid hasn't affected my life at all (here). I've not met anyone who's caught it.

That is one of the things the anti-vaxxers in the US say -- get in shape, become a vegan, take vitamins... whatever, and you can't die from Covid. No medical science to back it up, but who needs science. Besides, even if you survive, or don't even get hospitalized, you can still catch it and spread it to other people.

That's the thing the anti-vaxxers don't get... it's not all about ME.

Not the same here. The least vaccinated are younger people and Republicans. In Texas, young people are invincible, and Republicans aren't going to let Biden tell them what to do.

And if it comes to stating anecdotal evidence here:

I know previously healthy young people (below 25) who caught covid and got severe long term consequences from it. I know a 19 year old who can't even take a shower on his own anymore and he's a year in already,

Yet I also know elder heavyweight chronically ill people who breezed through covid and had no problems whatsoever.

Anecdotal evidence proves nothing. The science says the virus is dangerous for anyone, so that's what I believe.

Our local pub landlord tweeted about all the cancellations that have happened in the past few days, I understand people are getting a bit twitchy. We both feel safe being there, infact we will be there at lunchtime today with my sister and her husband for Christmas Dinner, we are all vaccinated, staff are tested before every shift, ok we don't know about others in there but we cannot lock ourselves away again. Just need to be safe and sensible.

I really feel for the hospitality industry, and especially pubs in the UK, which are the hub of much social activity.
I read the other day that the number of "no shows" for lunch or dinner is around 1 in 7. That is truly unacceptable and selfish, not only because it affects the pub´s income, but also because it denies someone else the chance to eat.
I can see compulsory deposits coming in for restaurant/pub bookings.

What do you mean there's no medical science? Look at the data of those who die from COVID, they all have co-morbidities, last I read, 89% were obese. There's a reason that the US got hit hard and that minority communities casualties were high: The people are supersized and unhealthy.

Compare the data to people in Asia and Africa and you'll see the same trend.

If people are afraid of covid, there are easy solutions at hand.

You can believe it or not, all I can tell you is people aren't freaked out about covid here because the news has been pretty good at informing the public of who is at risk.

Our local pub had a lot of no shows last year with people ordering a take out from them and not collecting, a lot of food and revenue was unnecessarily wasted.

None of that addresses the main point. Professional athletes are regularly infected with Covid, and they are as healthy as physically fit as your can get. They may not die from Covid, but they can still spread it to other people. Most of them will have parents, and even grandparents. Get Covid, visit Grandma, Grandma gets Covid and dies.

BTW, it may be Bubba's fault that he is 5-foot-6 and weighs 300 pounds, but it is not Grandma's fault that she is 85 years old.

Correct. But grandma isn't going to live forever and at 85 has already exceeded the average age of life. RIP grandma, no society should sacrifice its youth, and the whole planet does not need to vaccinate, so that you might live to 86 -- and that is what WESTERN countries are doing (from what I see on the tele here).

The pandemic is now endemic, a fact of life. We are all going to get it at some point, so if every person on the planet is quadruple vaxed it will not make a difference a la breakthroughs and evolution. We all die. There are things we can do to mitigate that fact but the cause of yours and my death is already out there: "Life is a sexually transmitted dis-ease and death is the only cure." (Lacan)

Wow. How old are you?

I had my booster on Saturday afternoon and it totally knocked me out.....alternating fever and chills, fatigue, aching arm, sore stomach, but luckily no headache. So yesterday (Sunday) was a write-off....I spent most of the day on the sofa, hubby had to find himself something for dinner because I wasn't in any state to cook (or eat) anything. Was in bed by 7pm! This morning I feel a lot better, though still not back to 100%. The side effects from this one (which was Moderna) are so much worse than I had with the AZ I had before.

I had Moderna booster too last week, after having two AZ but luckily suffered no side effects other than a sore arm for two days.

Mod.comment: This is a dangerous argument. Whether or not intended, it implies a 'survival of the fittest' mentality which we cannot support on this forum. Many of our members are elderly or have other medical issues which make them vulnerable to Covid and many any are grandparents themselves.
