How is the corona virus affecting you?

Yeah, my first two shots were 25 miles away, and my booster was 15 miles away - but both very pleasant backroads country driving.
LOL. For the first vaccine I found one available in the hood but opted to wait a bit (I was staying home in isolation with hubby anyway at the time). My dental group offered my 1st and 2nd vaccines (contacting via email), which was nice. A dental hygienist jabbed me, LOL. It was fine, it's not rocket science to figure out where the deltoid muscle is, no phlebotomist or nurse necessary.

My booster was 2.5 miles away from my house at a Rite Aid Pharmacy. Hubby gets his Tuesday.

So speaking of jabs, last night my husband had a lengthy phone conversation with oldest child, my stepson (so weird since he lives right next door but because he is not vaccinated we don't see him in person). SS is 33 years old the 27th of this month. Hubby has been reticent to force his opinions on the adult children, he has suggested the vaccine to them since it became available but has not been pushy, which I found exasperating at times because if it was up to me I would have been forceful about it, but hubby said they were adults and could make their own decisions.

But apparently he finally has had enough. So hubby basically said something to the effect of, "Your grandma is in her late 70s and is immunocompromised. This virus is not going away. I really don't want you around her unless you get vaccinated, if you give her covid it will probably kill her after a lengthy stay in the hospital with a tube shoved down her throat so she can breathe, and you won't be allowed to go say goodbye. So if you want to spend any time with her in the coming years, go get jabbed. Christmas dinner at your little sister's house was canceled because her fiancé got sick, which is unfortunate. He feels awful but not bad enough to go to hospital. If he hadn't gotten the vaccine he could very well be in ICU, and if you get sick it could be you."

Oldest SS agreed to go get vaccinated and has made his appointment for the week after Christmas.

Wow, immunocompromised is nothing to fool with. Maybe everyone take a home PCR test before getting together because even though everyone may be vaccinated and boosted they may be asymptomatic. Take care.

Oh well Xmas dinner was canceled when youngest stepdaughter's fiancé got his test results back yesterday and found out he has covid-19.

Yeah, MIL has an incurable lung infection, she has been on antibiotics off and on for several years. Her doctor wanted her to take two different kinds and she did at first, but then she refused to take both because she felt fatigued and had no appetite (she is of slight frame already) so now just takes one, but every so often she will just quit taking it and then go back on it when her cough gets really bad. You know, MIL does what she wants to do and no one can tell her anything. After I found out my unvaccinated stepson had been invited to Xmas dinner, I asked to my stepdaughter if grandma knew that he had been invited, and she said yes, grandma was aware but didn't seem concerned and didn't cancel.

The in-laws wear masks to grocery stores but they still shop in person, and they go to restaurants to eat (I won't even though I am not immunocompromised). On Xmas morning they are going to visit some other relatives who have a young child who has not been vaccinated. She is aware of the risks but says she isn't going to live her life in a cage.

I would prefer to be on the safe side. And we do have some home tests, hubby went and bought some yesterday. But we have no gatherings planned anymore since Xmas dinner was canceled.

I am in the process of making some homemade chicken soup to drop off on the doorstep of youngest daughter later this afternoon for her fiancé. I hope she doesn't get sick too, but I would imagine it's hard with the furnace running throughout the house and both people needing to use the bathroom, go to the kitchen, etc. Seems like germs are going to spread. She is 10 years younger than he is, maybe she just won't get symptoms or will only get a very mild case. Or not get it at all!!!!!

The first real studies of the performance of Omicron are coming through at last. Dr John Campbell presents some findings from the University of Hong Kong showing that it infects and reproduces in the large bronchial pathways very easily, but infects the deep lung tissue and alveoli much less than Delta leading to fewer instances of the pneumonia manifestation of symptoms which is the killer.
If supported by other studies this is good news.

Dr John takes a couple of minutes to get really into the report.

This Hong Kong study got me thinking back when I first viewed Dr. Coetzee talking about the differences in symptoms and was especially interested in why no taste and smell problems this time. Basically it's not damaging the olfactory epithelium or much less and the cough that was present in Delta is now more of a scratchy throat along with other flu like symptoms. Just thought that was interesting. Was the cough caused by the damage of Delta to the bronchi in the tubes and lungs, I believe that was mentioned and a scratchy throat may be that change ? Cheers.

I would suspect your stepdaughter will be infected, omicron is just too infectious but if she's not too old and in decent shape health wise the odds are extremely low and the young child not vaccinated...... probably because they're too young to qualify yet. It's almost nonexistent around the world and yeah, you have to use critical thinking and logic decisions otherwise your a prisoner living in fear.

Delta isn't done with us yet, omicron is not the predominant strain here--yet. They aren't doing a lot of genomic testing on people who aren't hospitalized, but the majority of patients in hospital currently have Delta.

Youngest stepdaughter (she's 27) doesn't have any kids, thankfully. It's another relative that MIL is going to visit that has the unvaccinated child. MIL will not be going to youngest stepdaugher's house.

I will be happy in my cage, thank you! I really like my house. It's large enough to walk around and get plenty of exercise, I have a big kitchen, a well-stocked pantry, and lots of kitchen toys to play with, computers, TV--and my husband is great company. After 22 years we still really, really like each other and have similar tastes and similar views on many things. Of course the love thing as well, obviously.

Omicron is now taking over in my province of Ontario. 4177 new cases, it was slowly moving in the 700 case numbers a day for about a month, until a week ago. 905 were unvaccinated. 142 partially vaccinated. 153 unknown status. 2977 fully vaccinated.

Ontario has over 80% double vaxxed. This number is a little skewed because the lowest vaccinated group are children 5-11with 36% with 1 vaccination and 0 double vaxxed at this time with this child population about 2 million, which represents about a fifth of the population in Ontario. In the group more vulnerable from 50yrs and up the number is closer to 93% double vaxxed. Deaths went down from 4 to 2 today but this would be the Delta I'm assuming with Omicron data probably a week away still on deaths. Adults in ICU today is 159 which hasn't changed from sept for example, which I though would have spiked a bit this last week, but hasn't.

It's been established by every gov't in most Countries that cases counts are only the number established from testing but as we have been told many people are asymptomatic and 4 to 6 times more than tested are also infected. Basically there was more than likely 20,000 newly infected people in Ontario today and this will apply in every Country. This may sound bad but if those 15,000 that don't has symptoms or similar have been infected with Omicron then they just picked up natural immunity as well as their vaccine immunity, which is a very good outcome, not a bad one. Cheers and stay safe.

The spread in Prince Edward County was basically non existent even with the influx of tourists during the season. We're having a get together Christmas Eve and out to a few other ones before New Years Eve, where I'll be working. We're just putting the tasting menu together for that night. We're now officially closed until New Years Eve, so hopefully the extra alcohol during this time of year will be a co-inhibitor against any viruses lol.

To confirm your last paragraph, in the UK the Zoe research program is also estimating up to 5 times the infection rate of that reported as confirmed cases. This is either because people are taking lateral flow tests at home and not reporting positive results, are asymptomatic, or misdiagnose themselves as having a cold. So this means the true UK infection rate could be 500,000 a day, the implication of which is that in a population of 60M this is going to burn itself out very quickly but potentially the NHS could become swamped very shortly.

This all reported by the BBC News Channel, if I find this analysis recorded then I will post a link.

Yes, that is the concern VC that HC in Ontario and the rest of Canada could be overwhelmed. Piggy back that with the mandatory isolation when a person is infected would leave many front line people in isolation causing havoc everywhere. The upside is the natural immunity that people will benefit from and work in unison with any that are vaccinated and help any tremendously that aren't.

EDIT TO ADD:

I guess the bigger problem is the reinfection rate, so much for natural immunity. Maybe the second time around people are less sick if otherwise healthy? Time will tell.

Actually with 20,000 cases a day now and only 159 people in ICU for covid and 283 in hospital overall is pretty low but not sure how many of those people are included in those numbers, but i suspect very few, maybe a dozen. I know in kingston they had 333 new cases with no hospitalizations today, but haven't looked for other regions . Natural immunity according to the studies mostly from Israel and India show natural immunity much better than the vaccines and both is really optimal, which is what is happening in Ontario. Almost all of the 4177 cases today didn't end up going to hospital, so natural immunity and vaccines are working well, very well. Again I'm cautiously optimistic that Omicron will be the variant that basically burns its self out without many casualties and is rendered just another flu like coronavirus. Until then like TVC has eluted to which I agree with will be managing the high infection rate that will inevitably cause many essential workers, especially Doctors and Nurses and other hospital staff and people working in other essential service areas to isolate. It's going to get crazy I'm afraid.

Would love to see your tasting menu (obviously not in this thread).
No problem I will. Right now we're just talking though our options but we have secured some elk, so that will be on the menu for sure. I believe we've agreed it will be a tasting menu but that might change. Regardless I'll post our New Years Menu when finished.

Was that for your booster? I think it must come down to locality, maybe. The only shot I had any effort in scheduling was the first one, back in March. The second one was automatically scheduled, based on the date of the first one, and a few days before I hit the mark for the booster, I went out to the pharmacy's scheduling app, checked my local one...nope, checked one the next town over...nope, checked one the next town up...yep, scheduled. It's weird how it's so patchwork-like. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Each pharmacy location has to have people on staff qualified to give shots. All pharmacists are qualified, but I don't know about all pharmacy techs.
