Plans for today (2023)

Today, it’s back to the salt mines (meaning the third-bedroom-wfh-office), and I’m on call this week for the first time in six weeks…ugh!

In between work tasks, I need to flip the mattress and clean one of the bathrooms, and make something for supper tonight (thinking it’s going to be spaghetti, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes).

IKEA (Irritating Kids in Every Aisle) - I don’t go there on weekends. Absolutely will not go near the place on weekends. It’s a madhouse.

It’s just about manageable on a day off during the week, and I like wandering through the main path, though I care not for bedroom/bathroom stuff, and I do like to take a break halfway through for a cup of tea and some kind of snack in the cafeteria - I don’t know why I like that so much, but it’s my favorite part of the experience.

We have one big item from there, the queen-sized guest bed, which is metal and built like a truck. I also have a couple of smaller kitchen items, utensils mainly. They excel at display things you have no need for at all and convincing you otherwise - “Oh look! A 1970’s-style gaudy plastic terrarium that looks like a prop from Space: 1999! That’ll look great in the…um…well, maybe the…oh, just buy it already!”

Had to go to HEB to pick up a few things.

Still not back.

My son said he’s never going there again 😂

But it was a successful shopping trip and if I ever actually get home I’ll post the little bits that are cooking related.

John Lewis picnic section was decidedly below par compared with previous years. Hopefully just an aberration.

What’s HEB?

It is a chain of grocery stores in Texas. The store in Jas_OH's post looks like an older store, looking at the logo on the building, which is more common where she is, right now (Southwest of Houston, I believe).

H-E-B is known for having excellent meats. Here is the store here in Frisco...

-1 deg c here. Wife has gone to work..she turned heat pump on when she left. I showered and came downstairs to 21 deg.
I need to go out to get booze. When it warms up?

My brother bought his mother-in-law a house in Puerto Rico and my sister-in-law is there helping her move in and get settled so I'm taking care of their house and animals in Texas. I'm making prepared meals for my sister-in-law to eat after she gets back from Puerto Rico. My brother is working out of town and she dislikes cooking for herself.

She's such a sweetheart. In exchange for my housesitting and dogsitting, I asked for a plane ticket only. When I told her the price of my ticket she sent me double the amount via PayPal. I tried to give it back but she refused. Then when we went grocery shopping my 1st day here before she left, she insisted on paying for the food even though I heavily protested.

I went grocery shopping twice since then, and today I went grocery shopping again. Tomorrow when she gets back I'm making seared sea scallops for an appetizer and Chilean seabass with basnati rice and sauteed vegetables for dinner.

Tonight I'm cooking a mixture of peppers, mushrooms, onions, garlic and ribeye steak with creamy havarti and gouda cheeses for sandwiches (there's a nice baguette for that). I've also made a container of ribeye steak and vegetables in a lemongrass teriyaki sauce with a separate container of rice. I've got chicken thighs in the crockpot that I will debone in the morning and put in a container for her to use however she wants (with barbecue sauce or chicken salad, etc.). I'm also going to make some baguette French toast in the morning and I'll make a double batch so she can reheat some for breakfast Wednesday. I've got a container of fresh strawberries washed and cut for a topping, along with vanilla Greek yogurt. I'll make her some fresh guacamole to snack on with the ripe avocados I've got, too.

I fly out early Wednesday morning. It's been hot and humid here and I miss my husband terribly.

Wow 🤩

Could you come and look after my house and animals! 😆

I think what you’re doing is absolutely lovely.

Why Puerto Rico?

Thank you. If you met my sister-in-law you'd get it. Over the years she's opened up their house to us so many times. Houston has been our launching pad regularly, so when we fly in we spend the night here at their house and then rent a car and drive over to see my family in Port Arthur, then drive back here and either fly back home or somewhere else (Austin, Phoenix, San Diego, or somewhere in Mexico).

Puerto Rico is where they are from and she has lots of family there. My sister-in-law's mom was living in Florida but they found a good deal on that house and now she's near a large majority of their family.

Always good to be near family (or good friends) and familiarity as the years rack up.

You get out and about a lot! 🤩
