Plans for today (2023)

I know that feeling, we had part of the garage door leaking, and when the construction guy first looked at it, he said it was likely termites and we were probably in for several thousand dollars of treatment and repair, depending on how far they’d gotten into the framing.

Once he was done, it turned out to just be a little bit of rot from the water getting in, and the whole thing wasn’t even a thousand.

As it turns out, all that heavy watering I did during the summer drought may have been part of the cause of my cracked walls. The corner of my house that has risen is where I have been watering heavy.

I'll have to pay someone to repair the cracks. I know how to do it, and do it well, but the cracks are up at/near the ceiling in myliving room, which means they are over 20 feet up. I don't have a ladder that tall, and don't think it would be wise for me to work that high even if I had the ladder.

For now, I will let the house stabilize. I can live with the cracks for a few months.

Texas black clay soil, AKA "Black Gumbo" is very unstable as it goes from wet to dry and back, over and over.

Good morning from Genoa:

Plans today include a 6-hour trip around Rapallo (walking and driving), where we’ll get some more focaccia, and then a group lunch at a restaurant, for pasta and pesto. 🤷‍♂️

Supposed to rain today. Hopefully, we’re inside eating pasta before that happens.

Well, plans for tomorrow have changed quite a bit. We’re high-tailing it out of Genoa as soon as we can get cleared, to try and beat the weather, but our scheduled port of Livorno for tomorrow has been closed, so we have to go on a bit past that, to La Spezia.

Also, they said that right now, they don’t know anything about the tours yet - they may go on as scheduled, they may go on, but be truncated, or they may be cancelled entirely. 🤷🏻

Really, looking at the 10-day forecast everywhere we’re headed, it seems that we may be in for a lot more rain. Oh well, we’ll see.

Oh well…cruise news has gone from bad to worse.

The weather worsened to the point that we weren’t able to dock in the secondary port (La Spezia, Italy), so that’s right out.

That means, in order to stay on our schedule, we’re just out gurgling around, s l o w l y making our way to our next port, Kotor, in Montenegro.

Here’s the thing: we were supposed to have that day in Italy (with excursions to Florence and Pisa, though I was staying on the ship anyway), followed by two “at sea” days - now it’s three “at sea” days in a row.

How soon before we all start eating one another, or this turns into a “Lord of the Flies” situation?!

As such, I’m partaking in one of the less-advertised cruise activities…laundry:

Oh my…that fluorescent lighting is rather unsettling - I like it! Look out for news headlines from the Mediterranean:

📰…This just in… 🗞️…The Laundry Room Creeper has struck again! … 📢 …last seen wearing Mrs. O’Malley’s underpants … on his head!… Beware! No one is safe!… 📰

^^^ and I thought I was strange in that, but I just talked to another couple this morning, and they were the same way - they had the free laundry service as part of their package, and the husband thought that meant the laundromat was free for them to use, and I told him, “No, that means they’ll do your laundry for you, 24-hour turnaround time.”

He said, “Well, let’s just do that, let them do it! We paid for it!”

His wife immediately said, “Noooooooo, no one else is doing my laundry! My laundry, my way!”

:highfive:

Especially considering we have complimentary laundry service available, but I don’t like other people touching my laundry!

I let the Cruise ship do my laundry. I couldn't do a two week cruise without having some clothes washed. I also used the complimentary service to press my formal suits between formal dinners.
