Plans for today (2023)

My day got SNAFU'd. I had planned on making the sauces i need for 2 dinners later in the week, plus my last challenge recipe, and a quick easy dinner. I also needed to make a purchase order and an invoice in our accounting program for Craig's little business that i have run since his accident/stroke back in 2020, and needed to print a couple of things to do that. What should have been a 15-20 minute task turned into hours.

We've got an old, and i do mean old computer. I don't remember when we got it, but it came with Windows XP before they even put out the first service pack. I have replaced the power supply once. It has a RAID setup, which means it has 2 hard drives that mirror each other so if 1 fails, you always have a fully complete exact backup, and the computer will still boot with only 1 working drive. I've replaced drives at least 5 times, maybe 6. We still use it because it has the accounting program Craig started his business with back when. Well, I started it, it booted, i did some of the data entry, then switched to a newer computer to access email so I could print what i needed to finish.

No go on the print. I'm getting madder and madder, then realize something. Our modem/router died a little over a week ago so I had to replace it, which meant a new password for our home network. I had updated the password for everything but the printer, which is wireless, except for the old computer which is cord connected. Okay, go to enter the new info. The printer was stubborn and refused to recognize the new router, and when it finally did, kept telling me password was wrong. I finally got the printer connected and the info i needed printed out.

Then, i turn back to the old computer to finish entering info and am confronted with the BSOD, aka blue screen of death. Well, a few, actually quite a few, blue words came out of my mouth. I restarted the computer and chdsk came up, ran, and proceeded to tell n
me the config file was missing or corrupted and i needed to boot from a disk. Okay, i drag out the original disks. Yes, i actually still have them. Only thing though, i never hooked the CD/DVD drives back up when i had the computer apart to replace the power supply. A few more blue words came out when I realized this. So, turn off the computer, hook up the 2 drives, 1 is a slave drive. Start the computer again. It booted but now it tells me 1 of the RAID drives is bad so i have to replace another drive. I got the accounting work done and backed up those files.

There is a huge amount of photos and other stuff on there that craig is supposed to drag and drop stuff he wants to keep so i can upload that stuff and he still hasn't done, even though it's been 6 months since he was first told to do it.

I'm going to try to keep it limping along until the end of the year and then we are switching to a cloud based accounting program. I'm done with this.

I know how you feel. I ran myob system and end of month was hit n miss with statements etc, ink running out, I got sick of it and gave it to my computer guy for himself.. I dont miss end of the month stuff.

We actually are using MYOB, but due to the age of the computer and its history, i run reports every time I make an entry unless it's something small, but I had an almost $1000 accts payable and a $1300+ purchase order and invoice, plus a couple of smaller transactions to enter so all the reports got run. I run them as PDFs and upload to cloud so I don't have to actually print them until end of year. But, i needed to print out a recent invoice from our supplier. They just went up on everything and I've been updating pricing as things come in since it's such a small business.

I used to be Marketing Manager for an Accounting software company in the 90s. MYOB was a competitor -- we were the biggest, at that time.

Myob was perfect for my operation.
Just sat down prepping for later.
Made salad and dressing. Precooked sausys, opened a jar of my home made beetroot. Shrimp cocktails later.
Brulees cooling atm.

Busy day today, for an “at sea” day:

Currently waiting on breakfast delivered to the room, and after that, we’re going on a tour of the kitchens.

Shops on board are 70% off today, so I’ll go poke around that, but doubtful if I’ll buy anything, and MrsT has bingo later today, and a magic comedian later.

Busier for her, not so much for me.

That's one on-ship activity I would sign up for. That, and a tour of the engine room. :okay:

Well, it definitely was interesting. I’m not a facts and figures kind of person, but I was amazed to find out we’re going through 17 tons of food and drink a day - he joked that 16.5 tons was bottled water, because it’s sort of a running joke that every time anyone orders a drink, they get two bottles of water as well.

Also, the kitchen and waitstaff make up something like 60% of the ship’s crew, the largest department, with almost 700 people.

We walked through the kitchen, pics aren’t great except to show the scale, but here goes:

That kitchen is 12,000sqft…and there are 14 kitchens in total, all the same.

This was my favorite from the kitchen:

That’s a display of potato dishes they make. There are three other displays, all along the walk through the kitchen, just as long, all unique, showing every way they prepare the humble potato.

The other thing I liked - the executive chef went out of his way to point out that everything served in the dining rooms, restaurants, the buffet, is all made from scratch on the ship. No canned tomato sauce, every last pastry is baked from scratch, and the kitchens never shut down, they’re going 24/7, and that Princess is one of the last cruise lines to make everything from scratch on board.

Yesterday I had a workout early, then physio for my hand. After I walked back home, I’d planned to do some work out in the yard, but instead I fell asleep on the couch.

When I woke up, we still had just enough time to put window markers on the glass of one window, so we did that. We’re adding a pattern of dots to the window to prevent birds from striking the glass. I’ve been in contact with the bird safe people at work, and realized just how many birds die in window collisions every year, so I’m treating my windows at home to prevent it. (We’re working on getting it done at work too, but taller buildings mean booms and things are required, which increases costs. I have a bungalow so all I need is a stepstool).

Tonight I have concert tix, so I’m just relaxing and watching football until it’s time to leave and meet up with my brother for the show.

I think that’s a great idea and very thoughtful!

I've had a bird hit a window in two of my past offices. They had highly reflective glass. I was facing the windows both times. I watched them fly towards me, and thought, "Is it going to stop?"

A comedian whose name I don't recall once said that he can understand the birds thinking the glass was sky, but why didn't they at least try to avoid the other bird (their reflection).

I don't worry at home. In my whole life, I've never had a bird hit a window at home. Relatively small windows surrounded by house are easier for bird sized brains to process, I guess.
