Plans for today (2025)

Plans for today included cleaning the corner of the garden behind the "summer house "( it's not strictly a summer house, because we don't get summer and winter here).
Removed two large black bagfuls of dead leaves, dead plants and weeds and finally, the place is looking a bit more presentable. I've got 6 passion fruit plants which need planting there, plus I'm going to move the cymbidium orchids to the side, and I've got tomato plants and dozens of chiles (Thai, local chirel, chiltepin, scotch bonnet) which are getting too big for their pots.
Tomorrow is another day.
Yeah chili's!

…and I got called for work while I was shopping at Kroger. 🤦🏻‍♂️

What kills me is, we have a “first line of defense” team offshore - that’s who called me. About 30 people, their calls come in through a switchboard, and they never identify themselves or any details:

<RING…RING…sees call is from India location>
Yeah, hi, this is Tasty.
Yeah, uh, I’m calling from offshore, there is a failed job, can you please look into it ok bye thanks.
Wait, who is thi-
<Click…hangup>

🤦🏻‍♂️ 😠

I had to stop mid-shop, run out to my car and get my laptop, boot it up, go through all the extra security of logging in when it’s a new network, get online…all the offshore guys have punched out for the day, they’re gone, no idea who called me, checked everything, no failed jobs, everything’s fine.

😠 😡

That took about 20 minutes. Back to shopping…20 minutes later, I get another call from another team, wanting to know when I’m going to ever get to this failed job that’s holding their stuff up.

Back online, look again…the offshore guys had misdirected the issue for our failed stuff to some other unrelated group, which explained why I never got paged in the first place, and now a whole lot of other people are ticked off at me.

😡 😡 😡

If I weren’t so tired from being up…32 hours straight now, I’d fly to India, drive the remaining few hours to their facility, introduce myself, maybe grab a cup of tea and a snack, and spend the rest of the day cramming all their heads up their asses.

Water and boots.

You could make a game for us. Take a before photo and then move 10 random items, take another photo, and have us figure out which ones got moved...no, nevermind lol.
When you guessed it we could have Vanna White pick a #10 can with the prize...

Now I understand why you want to retire. Absolutely, totally understand!!

I was an hourly so if *anything* happened after hours it was an automatic 4 hours, each time I had to touch something.

When you get home get one of karadekoolaid 's beers.

Oh, I remember those days…they’d never call me after-hours because my bill rate back then would’ve made a lawyer envious - they actually had employees who’d come around at 4:45PM, announcing, “Consultants! Out in 15 minutes! Do not bill overtime! Overtime is not authorized!”

Good for you! 👏

That’s very frustrating.
Do you have a countdown timer on your phone? I use a ‘vacation countdown’ app.
Nice background of your choosing with an ever decreasing amount of time left til holiday/freedom/event.
Always cheers me up when I’m dealing with ongoing cr*p I don’t want to, just have a peek and see there’s even less time left for all the bollo than the last time you looked.
Occasionally I’d take a screenshot and make it my phones wallpaper, knowing that whatever it says it would be even less time now 😂

This one started on 56 weeks.

Well my sourdough starter (aka "the Kraken") I fed earlier today is slow waking up since it's so cold in the kitchen. I found a good recipe for pumpernickel bread and I have all of the ingredients on hand. If she wakes up enough soon I will start a loaf tonight. Otherwise, it will be tomorrow morning (the big game doesn't start until around 7pm). I will go ahead and make the dip tonight, though.

Here's the recipe for the bread. I have made other sourdough items from this person that turned out nicely, so I am pretty confident this will be good too.
Sourdough Pumpernickel Bread Recipe

SatNavSaysStraightOn, Barriehie, TastyReuben, or anybody who bakes bread regularly: the recipe calls for AP flour, rye, and whole wheat, but I'm wondering if I should use bread flour instead of AP flour to give the loaf a better gluten formation? Anyone have input and advice?

I don't see an issue replacing AP with bread flour. It may become a bit more chewy
But since the recipe contains rye, I would be tempted to go for bread flour :)

Whole wheat would be a different option as it needs slightly higher hydration

Got to get up and at it because the builders say they’re coming today and I haven’t quite finished turning the gate around so it opens in the opposite direction. Well I have turned it around but I haven’t put the second bolt on it.. it’s cold out there 🥶
Then I need to return Mr SSOAP’s bike to the yard which I don’t want to do because that will be even colder than doing the gate! 😂

Shopping delivery coming this afternoon. Not at all inspiring as I’ve had to go for simple in and out the oven food so I can get on with the dining room clearance.

Only thing of any interest coming today is a pork shoulder joint that I’ll cold cure in brine for a few days to make into ham. Haven’t done that for a while. Annoyingly avoiding sulphites and nitrates seems to be working out well, the oddest thing is apart from the rosacea receding which is nice is I’ve stopped sneezing all the time, who knew that was a sulphite thing!

As normal hams racked out with the stuff it’s back to basics we go! 😂

Edit: 8.15am and the gate is completed and at such speed I didn’t get cold, winner winner chicken dinner!
