The CookingBites Recipe Challenge: Nov 2015-June 2017

It has a curious taste. Rather like tea.
I'll see if I can get any this week. I can remember as a kid using my teeth to scrape off the fleshy parts at the base of the leaf of globe artichokes (?) before you got to that end bit that is the main part? I will have to try to find some.

It is interesting you say they taste like tea. I'd never thought of that - but I've just been experimenting with some tinned artichokes and you are right! Another interesting fact about globe artichokes is the affect they have on the taste of wine. If you eat an artichoke and then sip some wine - the taste of the wine is totally changed to something - well, not very good.

Are artichokes recipes knocking at the kitchen door? :peekaboo:
I think you've got us stumped on this one. I have never eaten artichokes and don't know anyone who does. They don't seem to turn up on menus in any of the cafes or restaurants I go to either, and it's definitely not a case of not being adventurous enough to try them.

@Elawin, if you can't find fresh ones then they are sold in tins in water in supermarkets. The sort in tins are the baby hearts of artichoke. They can be used in salad ore heated and added to other dishes - good on pizza, for example. The fresh ones need to be boiled (or microwaved) - then you eat the base of the leaves, pulling them off one by one until you get to the base. The base is the absolute treat and if you have never eaten one then you are missing out! I found fresh whole artichokes in the market in Saffron Walden (where I'm staying). But I also saw some in Waitrose yesterday. Tesco's also currently stock them - I think they are just coming into season.

Here are the tinned type - you can find them alongside other tinned veg such as asparagus. They can also be found in jars, sold as an antipasti in which case they are in oil garlic etc.

I think I've only ever used them in this neck of the woods as a pizza topping. I don't have any at the present time and this is not intended to be an entry into the challenge.

Quattro Stagioni.
