We have ceiling fans upstairs in lounge and bedroom, it gets so hot up there. Fan has been on in bedroom for last 3 months at night. Air con downstairs. I don't feel the cold, hence shorts n singlet every day.

I took Teddy to the vet this morning, and on the way home, I smelled a weird burning smell. I got home, and it was coming from under the hood (bonnet). I opened the hood, and there was a big rat's nest on top of the engine. I'm lucky it didn't catch on fire -- it was really close to the turbo, which is VERY hot.

Since one of my stupid neighbors had Animal Control round up the neighborhood feral cats, rats have moved back in from the open ranch land nearby. While the cats were here, I never saw any signs of any rats. The cats are dead (euthanized), and the rats are thriving.

Managed to find a local appliance repair guy, and I think he's a keeper.

He looked at the washing machine, said the transmission on the motor that turns the drum had gotten unseated or out of whack, put that to rights and charged me the flat $70 service call rate.

He told me that it was likely due to an unbalanced, bulky load, and that hopefully, it's fixed and gave me some tips on preventing unbalanced loads particular to the machine I have.

Let's hope he's right. Laundry tomorrow.

That guy needs to talk to my wife, a pet hate of mine, the washing machine beeping at unbalanced load. Can't tell you how many times I've shown her how to load it. Next day ...beep beep beep. Fux&$@&.

Well, our washer has a "precise fill" setting, where it's supposed to sense the amount of clothes and adjust the water accordingly, but he said that doesn't really work that well, and he said to skip that and use the bulky/sheets cycle, because that always fills to the max.

"You'll use more water, but you won't have nearly as many unbalanced loads."

Ours has three levels, I adjust when I load it. I also use the hand press and move stuff around as I see fit.
It doesn't beep with me,lol

I have a front loader. It seems to balance itself, because I never have to stop it and move things around. The spin cycle on that thing spins at ludicrous speed (who knows that movie reference?). Looking through the glass door, the clothes are a blur.

Great news:

My eldest stepson will move to a live - in accomodation at January 30th, which means that we'll be free of caring for him 24-7 for the foreseeable future. He's been on the waiting list for this for a very long time, and it's finally got a definite date. Lockdown or not, he's allowed to move in there so we're pretty relieved.
Just three more weeks and we'll be out of this constant state of stress and more importantly, my stepson will finally receive the care he needs. I hope he'll be happier there where there are more people like him. He's never had a friendship in his life, I hope this will change that.

I've read some posts about your stepson, this is great news. My uncle who has schizophrenia emigrated to the Netherlands and has also lived in a live in facility for mentally ill people for the last 30 years, somewherw close to Utrecht. He's very well taken care of. I'm sure this will be good for your stepson.

Yes our healthcare system is one of the best in the world. If it wasnt I wouldn't do this to him. But thanks to our system I am still alive and people like him can have a meaningful life as well. The place he is going to has a farm, recreative facilities and he will have a private room for himself.
