The postmortem to the shameful events of January 6th, 2021 - a day that will live in infamy (not my quote...I first heard Joe Biden make that comparison). Congress reconvened to certify the election, which is fantastic. Many in Congress said that they didn't want these national traitors to win. Also fantastic.
But, I don't think the rest of the world heard that, along with the vote to certify the election were votes to determine whether or not the votes in Arizona and Pennsylvania were legitimate. This seems strange, but that was part of the proceedings. Both states had multiple unsuccessful challenges to the election results in court, with Arizona's challenge twice being struck down by a Republican court. Both resolutions were rejected by a wide margin.
But, most disturbing was how many still voted to overturn the will of the people after the events of January 6th. The Senate voted 93-6 to reject the Arizona objection, while the House voted 303-121. The Senate voted 92-7 to reject the Pennsylvania objection, and the House also rejected the objection 282-138. Since the November Presidential election, there were 59 unsuccessful challenges in all to the election results. This included rejections by the Supreme Court, which had 3 Trump appointees, and a Republican majority. But 127 elected officials still voted to overturn the will of the people in Arizona, and 145 voted to do the same regarding Pennsylvania.
Even crazier, some people in Congress actually raised the completely insane idea - ON THE FLOOR OF CONGRESS - that the attack on the Capitol wasn't perpetuated by Trump supporters, but instead it was actually Antifa in disguise. Antifa is an extreme left-wing group that has been a favorite target of Trump and his minions. They aren't exactly saints, but suggesting that this happened when many of the people identified on camera were well-known Trump supporters is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard. And, stupid people are believing it.
I'm encouraged that long-time Republicans who spent the last 4 years kowtowing to Trump - notably Mitch McConnell, Lindsay Graham - are signing a different tune. But, this isn't over. The bad man is going to be gone soon - maybe even before January 20th - but a lot of bad people remain.
Upon exiting the Constitutional Convention in 1776, Benjamin Franklin was asked what sort of government the delegates had created. His answer was: "A republic, if you can keep it." We have it...for now.
