Hey, my brother in contaminated waste products. This isn't exactly in my back yard, but my state's piece of the action is about 50 miles away.

Officials in Texas and Michigan say they were unaware the toxic waste cleanup from the Ohio derailment was being sent to their communities

Yeah, Detroit is a lot like the SE coast of Texas. There is a huge toxic waste incinerator in Port Arthur that incinerates things like PCBs from as far away as Europe. Houston/Harris County didn't know the waste water was coming, either. That stuff happens here because Texas is a low regulation state.

Cities like Port Arthur are also poor, and allow anything (like a toxic waste incinerator) to move in just for the jobs created. Here is a picture of Downtown Port Arthur. Does it remind you of parts of Detroit?

WooHoo, first tornado sirens of 2023.

CD

Update: I'm still here. Gotta check the roof in daylight tomorrow. No hail, but 80MPH strait-line winds. The house behind mine no longer has a backyard fence. I ran to the store after the storm, and some people around here will be looking for their patio furniture tomorrow, because it ain't on their patios anymore.

From the article you linked... "But many people were quick to point out that other European countries don't seem to be suffering the same challenges, leading some to wonder if it was a consequence of Britain's divorce from the EU."

Bingo! (IMO)

It has to be, though the article also notes:

Britain's government has rejected the suggestion that Brexit is to blame. But shoppers aren't happy, and Environment Secretary Therese Coffey's suggestion that consumers should "cherish" British produce and eat more turnips instead of imported food drew widespread mockery.

Well, now they feel how it tastes not to be in the top spot from the western perspective. Hope we can manage good relationships in those stressful times.

Germany does have the same problem since covid, a slow but manageable decrease in comfort. It's still nothing compared to the earthquakes in turkey/Syria and I constantly feel snobby when somebody wants to know if I'm okay.

Could start at my new workplace mid April. It's gonna be a huge ghost kitchen with delivery partners like wolt, own small shops, a rentable workstation for chefs who might need it (food trucks), a cantina and even cooking classes are planned.

Everything is healthy and kind of sustainable but not organic.

Okay, my UK friends. What the heck is going on here:

Why is it so hard to buy vegetables in the UK?

I imagine you’re thinking the same thing. :(
I'm sorry for the UK people here. This article provides a better explanation though, and confirms that indeed the Netherlands might be exporting less.
Separately, the Netherlands, another major tomato producer, has seen a drop in output because skyrocketing energy bills tied to Russia's war in Ukraine meant many growers couldn't justify the cost of turning on the LED lights in their greenhouses this winter.
Which is also why IN the Netherlands, no tomato shortage is felt. We're just keeping more to ourselves. It is true that tomatoes are far more expensive than they ever were too. I used to pay 0.85 for a kilo, now the price is at 3.85.
For those who are less well off here, the standard of living has declined severly since the start of the war.

Well, now they feel how it tastes not to be in the top spot from the western perspective. Hope we can manage good relationships in those stressful times.
Those of us who voted to remain in the EU kept explaining that this was the type of thing that could happen, along with the economic hit and the social issues. Of course we can take no pleasure in being proved right because we are suffering too. We have now reached the stage where the lying politicians and the right wing press who conned so many people about leaving the EU are starting to fight amongst themselves and blame each other for the utter failure of the project.
I fear we are stuck in this malaise for quite a while and it will be in at least two Prime Ministers time before the idea or rejoining the single market will be raised as all the current crop of senior MPs from both parties backed leaving.
My hope is that in the long term this bout of self inflicted harm will make Britain a little less arrogant and more realistic about its position in the World.
