The General Chat Thread (2024)

I HATE Hallmark for assuming everyone is Christian and wants to see Christmas movies 24/7 for three damn months. And one night a week ALL year! They have all these freaking channels now dedicate ONE to Christmas and call it Hallmark Christmas! I want to see mysteries on Hallmark Mystery. Christmas stuff should start on December 1st and end December 31st.
Ok, rant over for now.

Probably something I would avoid like the plague... if they had bloodthirsty historical series, blood sports like rugby and football, hysterical comedy and some good old police/detective shows, then I might consider a subscription :D :D
Well, last night, we watched a Halloween-themed movie (they don’t make just Christmas movies), and it had some American Revolution-era ghosts in there, some fighting…we watched a Christmas one yesterday, and a fellow had gotten shot with an arrow, and when his best-girl-to-be saw him, she pulled the arrow out, making him scream and flop around, but the wise old man who was there said, “You shouldn’t do that, never remove an arrow like that,” so in a panic…she crammed it back in, making him scream and flop around some more - and then his best friend showed up and…repeated the whole thing. That was funny.

They also have police procedurals, a separate channel called Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, even episodic TV series…but you have to get used to the principal character and the detective falling in love at the end…or the principal character and the wrongly-accused murderer falling in love at the end…or the principal character and the noble defense attorney falling in love at the end…

Oh, but they don’t just do Christmas movies these days…they’ve got Hanukkah movies and movies featuring Indian characters and culture seem to be very popular right now, and other Asian cultures as well (and the aforementioned storylines with same-sex couples).

I’m still waiting for the atheist Christmas movie, to play to my demographic, so they still have room to grow (although, in all seriousness, most of their Christmas movies are irreligious and just focus on the festive feeling rather than anything overtly biblical - Santa shows up in a lot more of them than Jesus. I’m not even sure I’ve ever seen a walking, talking Jesus in a Hallmark movie, but Santa makes an appearance in a lot of them, usually orchestrating some behind-the-scenes Christmas spirit matchmaking).

One thing that makes me laugh in all these Hallmark movies - they’re all about romance, but no one ever has sex…I’m not even sure anything ever alludes to sex, except when they do one of those “One Year Later…” closing scenes and the happy couple are now married and she’s got a baby on her hip…hey, how’d that happen?

I actually pay more attention to the Movies & Mysteries channel, and they even have some supernatural stuff there, which we both like.

Anyway, we were paying $60/month for SlingTV, just for two channels: Hallmark and TCM. Now, we’re paying $80/year for Hallmark, and I can get most of my TCM content elsewhere, so that’s a big bonus.

Not called Movies & Mysteries channel. Now it’s just Mystery channel. Three months of Christmas movies is ridiculous.

Don’t forget Christmas in July… :whistling:

I think on Sling, they’re still calling it Movies & Mysteries, but I’ll have to check to be sure.

Oh, and there’s some Hallmark Channel controversy going on again…the Christmas movies have their royalty of “leading ladies,” and Lacey Chabert is the Queen, with Holly Robinson-Peete at her right hand, along with a couple of other ladies-in-waiting (Danica McKellar) - these are the studio stars, and people tune in just to watch those specific performances.

Well, well…a studio employee is leveling charges of ageism against the studio for firing her, and she says she’s seen internal memos where studio executives are planning to oust Lacey and the others for being “too old” to portray romantic parts any longer. Lacey is…42, while Holly is 60. Both, by any measure of conventional physical beauty standards, are very attractive.

Oh…the drama! Is some pretty young thing going to seize the moment and try and topple the one, the only, Lacey Chabert?! Does Lacey, being the seasoned veteran who still possesses the looks, have a few tricks up her ugly-Christmas-sweater sleeve?! - I wish they’d make the whole thing into another Christmas movie. I’d watch that!

My incubator is chirping at me. It's only day 19 of 21 and 4 of the remaining 8 eggs have pipped (that's an air hole for the chick to breathe through whilst it gathers strength to hatch.) This is the dry of eggs that lost power and heat at day 4 or 5 after the lightning strike locally blew out my fuse box. We risked moving the eggs to my neighbours some 1km away over a rough track in torrential rain to get them heat. It may have been worth the risk!

It’s the official start of “Ope, it’s gettin’ colder out, huh?” season here, as I’ve just had my first bowl of Grape-Nuts cereal, with raisins added, heated up in the microwave.
