Regarding long nails…when I was working at RAF Alconbury, a young woman who worked for me came to work one day with these incredibly long glued-on nails.

They were kind of a novelty at the time, and nothing in regulations that specifically forbade them, so I told her, “Fine with me…as long as you can do your job.”

Her job involved a lot of network cable-stringing, hooking up/tearing down network components (modems, monitors, disk drives, etc), and associated things.

Guess how long she made it? Not even three hours. She was pulling a modem out of a rack and got two of her long, custom-painted nails caught in the cooling fins on the side, and off they came…and they took her real nails with them, they were glued on so tightly.

No more nails for her!

I can sympathize. For those that don't know, my job was a lot of typing and research. We went on a long cruise once and I decided to get acrylics right before we left, not terribly long ones, just a bit longer than the longest of my self-grown nails. My nails weren't equal in length because natural nails, as we all know, break from time to time and I wanted to look good on the cruise. After we got home and I went back to work, those nails got cut down to my normal length within hours of my start time.

Couple countries I've been in, people grow their pinky nails to show they don't do physical labour. Both male and femle, but esp male.
I have to admit to finding proper physical labour straight away if they work for me

(Edited: to make inky nail into pinky nail)

I’m pleased to announce that MrsT’s interest in going to Shetland for my 60th birthday trip has just doubled, because during episode of the eponymous crime series, this popped up:

Yes, roadside honesty-box-help-yourself cake fridge. That’s all it took.

We recently discovered a great restaurant called Doms, they do tapas with a modern twist. We have been twice and enjoyed some really great food, however they posted on their Facebook page that due to a dispute with their landlord they have decided to close in January next year, they will honour all bookings but will not be taking any more. Damn :(

Yeah, we lost our favourite restaurant at the start of this year. They chose to close down sadly because it had become too much for them what with everything going on in Ukraine (they were Ukrainian). That's one of the main reasons we've hardly eaten out this year. We still miss them, but they've now sold the place so we know they won't come back sadly.

Despite doing meat and fish, they had an excellent vegan range of dishes.

We had the same happen, for the same reason, with our favorite place in Cincy.

It wasn’t a restaurant, but an old-fashioned Victorian punch house (and you know I loves me punch!), and she always had four punches on offer, by the cup, by the bowl, or you could get a sampling flight of all four.

It was a wonderfully unusual place to go and to take visitors, but the landlord saw the success the owner was having, raised the rent a ridiculous amount, the establishment closed, and that was that.

We had a good Korean place that had a similar thing happen. Landlord raised rent sky high so they closed. Building is still vacant over 2 years later...
