The General Chat Thread (2024)

We've got Sean Combs P Diddy who also had been committing creepy sexual offenses and before that it was Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby...all of which had been going on for a long, long time before someone spoke out. And others, too. It's horrible that these people of wealth and means can get away with it for so long. I am sure there were others back in the old days who did the same and/or worse but just never got caught.

Gregg Wallace presenter of Masterchef has stepped aside due to an ongoing investigation into wrong doing...another BBC creep who was protected.
A lot of banter goes on in a pro kitchen. It's a high pressure job for the cooks at all times, so jokes, pranks and other "stuff" tends to lower the tension - which is no excuse for the "Executive Chef" to pull rank and believe he/she can do what he/she wants.
The times they are a-changing.

He isn't really a chef and certainly not an executive chef. There is a lot of sexual innuendo banter around food, for sure and both men and women can join in on that. But it seems that Greg crossed the line with his innuendo towards female contestants, in this respect.

Which is why I put it in inverted commas. He acts like one - but as you say,not a chef. A successful greengrocer and restaurateur, but obviously someone who's not professional enough to keep his comments to himself. What's the expression? The higher you climb, the harder you fall.

Banter is fine if it is between people who know each other and how far they can go, however walking into a room wearing nothing but a sock on his fella is not acceptable when he doesn't know the people or not know them very well. Lewd comments are not on. As for a rape joke...what the actual f

Apparently this has been going on for a few years, what took so long?
He’s one of those people who knows where the line is and is careful not to fully cross it while still finding a way of making people feel uncomfortable.
Most of us have been on the receiving end of someone making us squirm with sexually charged ‘banter’ and speaking up just gets you labelled as someone who can’t take a joke… or worse.
Some of the things I put up with at work over the years because I knew I’d be painted as the bad guy were pretty awful!

Anyhow, you know what happened, you know they were getting kicks out of your blushes and you know when someone’s carefully manipulating you so they get a thrill at your expense.

With his comments today about “middle class women of a certain age” I suspect he’s buried himself!
It’s often middle class women of a certain age who are secure enough of their position that they can speak up without fear of losing their job. The interns and gig workers have to go along with it or risk never being asked back.

It’s not like he didn’t know he was making women uncomfortable, he was told quite plainly during the last round of complaints to reel his neck in!
