The General Chat Thread (2024)

Not happy. Storm heading across the south west (where I live in the UK) winds up to 80mph expected.
Governments alert sent out (our first ever) and even the BBC weather man said “If you have anything planned on Saturday that involves driving, I’m not going to mince my words, don’t do it, just shelve it and stay at home”

Dandy, expect my son just got a job in Mountain Warehouse and the manager has told them they have to go in tomorrow. FFS.

We get a couple of those every summer, and they’re no joke - they can be nearly as destructive to property as a tornado.

Yeah, some people up here freak out about hurricanes in Florida and when I first moved up here, they would ask me if I was scared. I pointed out that with hurricanes we had advanced warning. Most of the storms that blow through up here like that just pop up out of nowhere. Now granted, with hurricanes the winds are sustained for longer periods of time, but still.

Well my eldest is at home and in the midsts of battening down the hatches.
He’s not amused as I advised him to turn the big top heavy picnic benches (that are next to a patio window) upside down and he’s just finished a large pulled pork wrap 😂

The youngest said the two managers started arguing about whether they should be asking people to go in under the circumstances and he’s thinking they won’t open anyway but if they do he doesn’t feel inclined to risk his life to potentially sell a jumper to, well no-one because who’s going to go shopping tomorrow!

I told him if the buses aren’t running it’s because it’s not safe and it won’t be safe for him either!

Yeah, it's a shame when upper management pulls crap like that.

We had a few incidents where conditions were going to be far worse than what you will be having there (and they knew it) but made people stay at work anyway.

Factory workers threatened with firing if they left before tornado, employees say

Everything at home is currently in tact 👍
Fingers crossed it stays that way.
Apparently the wind speeds will lessen at around 11am.
Currently 33,000 homes without power 🙁
Fortunately we’re not one of them because the solar panel battery is set up to receive government storm alerts and automatically fully charges in preparation. I didn’t know it did that, clever this technology malarkey isn’t it?!

That’s the live wind speed map measured in mph. Not sure it’ll be spent in the next half an hour 😬

We both love a good electrical storm. MrsT will indeed stay up to watch it, but I’ll still turn in after 15 minutes or so.
I have to confess that by the time it is 12hrs or more old, it was starting to get to me... I didn't get much sleep last night. 🥱 and it carried on today though much less frequently. I'll know shortly if it's given up totally because we can often see the lightning that is out at sea from where we are and that's the best part of 100 miles away. That's the downside of being on top of one of the taller mountains around here. But it's also the upside...

Where my family live had a tornado yesterday.
My brother sent me photos. To be honest I was unimpressed. We had worse storm damage last Christmas day from several thunderstorms than they did from the tornado.

This won’t mean much to our friends with national health care, but I was having a laugh last night because MrsT was complaining about one of her usual aches & pains, something she’s gone to urgent care or the ER for in the past.

“I hope we don’t have to go to the hospital! I have no idea who’ll take our out-of-state insurance!”

I smiled and showed her the screenshots I already had saved off, showing what hospital and what urgent care accepts our insurance.

Getting old…

Lol. I do kinda get it.

When we go to a different country I’m the one with all the insurance documents printed and scanned into my phone, I’m the one with the emergency breakdown cover numbers saved into contacts, I’m the one with the high viz packed to ensure the law in other lands is complied with, I’m the one who makes sure our European Medical Cover cards are current and the travel insurance includes medical evacuation 😂

Oddly when I’m on my own I couldn’t give a hoot (as demonstrated recently when I broke down up north in the cold and dark with no tools and no clue if my bike still had break down cover😬) but if anyone else is with me I suddenly feel the need to be sensible for their sake! Lol🤣

McD’s syrup (at least in the US):

*No maples were harmed in the creation of our syrup.
Interesting the uk version is glucose and caramelised sugar.

I’ve just discovered McDs in Spain do Gluten free burgers! Obviously playing catch up with Burger King.
So I’m going to have to try one. What burger should I try?
