The General Chat Thread (2024)

General obliviousness to how things stay clean and tidy or how the food cupboards stay stocked seems to be pretty standard fare for those who haven’t ever taken full charge of it or had to do it for more than just themselves.

The thing I find irritating is the putting away of empty packaging (one cracker left in the box or an empty jar in the fridge with perhaps one gross scraping of jam left in it) and then it being followed by an indignant exclamation in my direction that “We’ve RUN OUT OF BLAH BLAH” 😑

While I was dapping about on my mobike a few weeks ago I rang home to check everything was dandy and they did manage a Hello, how are you before one of them told me they’d run out of nasal spray followed by Mr SSOAP saying “We’ve run out of ENGLISH MUSTARD!”
Nice to be appreciated
My kids used to leave empty packaging (pizza box, soda can box) in the refrigerator, being too lazy to throw it away. Mr. OH will do the "leave 2 bites in the pan" thing but not completely empty packaging or containers.

He put his cheese plate in the dishwasher last night without being prompted. I nearly fell over in shock.

in my elementary school years , , , there was a nearby orchard that used wooden hive frames about 4x4 inches - mounted in a larger frame - which they sold as honey-in-the-comb.
around here they best I can find is a chunk of comb floating in a 4 pound honey jar . . .

" . . . but not completely empty packaging or containers."

there is a technical term defining this behavior.
it's called "a henry" alternately in the family "a hank"

my father was Henry . . .

Chilly overnight... we're forecast 30°C today

Wow, that's a 25 degree difference between night and day!
(45 degrees Fahrenheit difference)
Thats huge!
I've seen much worse. A few Februarys ago, we were at 44.2C and dropped to 2.6C.... anything up to 30C in a day is normal where we are. You get accustomed to having multiple layers and/or a change of clothes with you for switcharoos during the day.

Are you on sandy soil?
Sounds desert-like
Yes and No.

This is the view (now) from my exercise bike and back bedroom. It's farmland on top of a mountain.

These are all taken on the land our landlord owns.

So no to desert but yes to sandy soil. It's typical bushland cleared for farming either hardy cattle (beef not dairy) or sheep.
