The General Chat Thread (2025)

Amazon won’t put up with that for too long because failed deliveries cost them money.
Soon enough they’ll have to do what they do here and photograph where they left it and send an automated email saying it’s been delivered.
Amazon don't deliver rurally. They palm it of on the postal service if they can (on a size wise baits). Otherwise it will sit in a couriers van (plain white) until they have other deliveries this way. Some stuff takes 2-3 weeks.

Even the postal service is only 3 times a week delivery now.

Currently I'm staring at a starry sky with an almost full moon. It's bright enough out to read and almost see colour. And yet I can still see lightning and hear and feel thunder.

I'm hoping for a quieter night tonight but I'm not holding my breath. Instead I'm looking at sine wave inverter generators and trying to decide how much to spend on one. Do I work on the grounds that one of these days it's going to be of for now than 12hrs.... and if so, do I run just the fridge freezer and dreep freeze, plus my laptop and screens and WiFi, or do we go bigger? I'd love to go solar but typically bad weather events are not conducive to much UV so recharging could be problematic. Humph... it's 4 figures pretty much either way because I've already decided it needs to have 2×15w 240v outlets not 1. We'd need one going into the garage and the other to the house.

And don't even bring up the delivery charges for it to be abandoned 16-65km away....

A difficult choice. I’d be interested to hear what you decide.

A lot of the batteries for solar are much higher tech now.
If a storms forecast you can fully charge your battery from the mains in preparation. Ours is set to do that automatically the night before while electricity is cheap.
It’s quite a comfort knowing you have plenty of power and the contents of your fridge are safe. It takes over so quickly the last power cut we had I didn’t notice until I saw the oven clock flashing 😂

I had thought about that, but the problem is that increasingly, it is taking much longer to get back connected. Most places are averaging days now after these storms, so a single charge and that's it isn't going to do it. I don't think I see the point of having to use my vehicle to charge the battery once it has been drained. And fully solar solutions are still prohibitively expensive living off just one salary.

I also can't have anything wired into the house here because we're not the home owners so automatic transfer is not on the cards.

Flash flood warnings in effect!

I noticed when I went to the burn barrel there's standing water even on the hills. It's  wet here...

We’re currently experiencing the worst snowstorm of the season, I’d say we’ve had a good 10 cm so far and it’s still coming down.

Although I prefer working from home overall, I miss the days when this much snow meant a day off work!

As much as you love snow, didn't you mean "the best snowstorm of the season"?

Yes agreed the cost of full solar is prohibitive.
A decent sized pack to power your phone and laptop must be a sensible thing to pursue though? I mean work wise you need your laptop (and we need you 😂 ) and not having to worry about keeping your phone charged for emergencies (without retreating to the car) would take the edge off things wouldn’t it?
And what about your nebuliser? Would the hospital/clinic consider providing battery back up?

Just a thought and I haven’t looked this up so have no clue if it’s possible but is it possible to use your car as a generator? I’m just thinking some clever soul must of invented something that allows a hook up to a car engine. I mean all the components needed are already in a vehicle, engine, fuel etc I would be surprised if it wasn’t possible to harness this in some way? 🤷‍♀️

Our heat went out about an hour ago. Just put extra blankets on the bed and extra thick socks on my feet. DH will call heating guys in the a.m.
Well it's about 4 a.m. and my DH is a neurotic mess over the furnace situation even though nothing can be done until the morning. It could be a number of things such as a faulty thermostat, wiring issue, bad flame sensor, etc., none of which he is qualified to figure out or fix. But since he won't sleep and he's pacing around, I'm not sleeping, and I have to go to work tomorrow, so...I'm annoyed. If the repair guys come by 9 and can be done by 11 that would be good. I need to leave here by 12:30.

I have a portable nebuliser that runs off AA batteries or USB. It can't do the hypertonic saline too often else they die (I killed one in 3 months because it's a micro mesh one, not a compressed air one) but it will do my nebuliser meds.

My OH is digging his heels in regarding the generator frustratingly. I guess having seen +$10k disappear from our account paying for the plane tickets and knowing we will need to get our own private health insurance as of September (we were on the corporate account but it was done to help us out but his company was taken over by an American account. It means the $450pm is going to gain another $1k which is going to mean ends won't meet anymore and I'll still have another 9 months to go on my masters...) so he's hesitant right now. I know him too well, so best not pushing it.

Ouch that’s a sharp increase in outgoings 😞 So am I understanding correctly that’s an increase from $450pm to $1450pm? Or is it to $1000? Sounds horrible either way.

Understandable being reluctant to spend on a generator. Car charging it is!

That’s a lot of money on tickets so I hope you really want to come back?!!
I know my brother in law and family (who live in Taz) won’t do it. When he does come (once every 6-7 years) it’s my mother and father in law that pay.
Then again he has got 5 children so 7 tickets is a heck of lot of moola to fork out to say “Hi!!”

So DH didn't get up early and call the heating people, he waited and called about 30 minutes ago and now they aren't sure they can make it out today cuz they are swamped. It's about 28F out right now but we have a space heater in the bedroom and a gas wall unit in the front hall that opens into the kitchen, so we are not freezing (it's about 67F in the house right now). I hope they can come out today because I like it at 70 much better. Guess I will figure out a way to use the oven tonight at dinner. Meanwhile I am getting ready for work.
