Funny you mentioned the basil or pesto because I was thinking either of those would make an excellent substitute for the mint!
If you can find it fresh in an Asian market, try green shiso/perilla, or grow it, though it can be temperamental. To me, the flavor is a combo of mint, cilantro and basil.
And SSOP is right, there is a world of difference in fresh mint and that nasty mint jelly stuff.
Ever tried a mojito? Fresh mint is muddled in it. I always order a mojito made with tequila instead of rum at the high end Mexican place we visit sometimes.
