Are anchovies Greek style? I just found that surprising. To me, Greek salad is feta, capers, olives, cucumbers, tomatoes. It could be my ignorance...
Ok, given where I am at the moment I can claim some knowledge of this. It is called village salad (only called Greek salad outside of Greek type countries ) and consists, from bottom up, of a dish of shredded lettuce or cabbage (depending on the season) sliced cucumber, sliced onion, quartered tomatoes, cubes of feta. In side dishes come olives, green with stones in, tahini, taramasalata, hummus or garlic potatoes and a bowl of sliced bread. Standard starter to most meals - twice a day for me at the moment!
 
We're still working our way through the broaster chicken, so I made a big salad for each of us. Hubby doesn't care how his looks, but I thought I would try and make mine all pretty. The baby spinach and butter lettuces are hidden by raw mushrooms, carrots, radishes, cold beets, tri-color tomatoes, and a dusting of goat cheese. I used a honey thyme balsamic vinaigrette - hence the dark stains. Egg, too, because we have lots of them.

We love it, it's delicious! But I've only had it as part of a chhese board, I've never used it in cooking, maybe I should try it.
 
It's all your fault. There's no good playing innocent, if you were involved then you bear part of the responsibility and you need to take responsibility for your actions. It was you going on about it that induced the craving, a craving so strong that I just had to go to the supermarket and buy all the necessary.

So guess what I'm having for tea tonight. Well, chicken mainly, seasoned and flavoured then pan fried and oven roasted. But that's not the bit that's your fault. It's what I am having with it that is your fault.

On the subject of aloe vera, I have only ever used it on small burns or sunburns.
Tonight will be marinated steaks, probably a potato and cauliflower/broccoli/carrots.
Thinking about either chocolate chip cookies or a rice pudding for dessert.

Did you use the leaves directly on burns? I only drink the juice but I've heard that it have a lot of other proprieties especially in the fresh leaves

Yes, I did.
I found out later that vinegar works good too but you smell like a pickle.

I am pleased to be partially responsible. Greek salad is a wonderful thing. And I've been craving it too. Unfortunately I've been rendered impotent by the worst migraine I've ever had or I would have gone out myself and bought the ingredients!

Actually, I have to apologise. I'm going to have to break my promise. I was half way through eating it when I suddenly thought - I was supposed to be photographing this. I didn't think it was quite the thing to photograph it half-eaten. Anyway, it was very nice. there was salad leaf, cucumber, Aromatico tomatoes, green olives - good big ones, feta cheese and all dressed in olive oil. Since you mentioned it, I was going to put some capers in there, but there were none is Asda. Huh, Asda. Typical. Still, it was a very nice tea. Thanks for the idea folks!

When I was in very rural Greece in the 1960s, salads usually consisted of anything that grew or was produced in or around the village, so it was mainly as you thought with the addition of any wild herbs etc. Two or three times a week, a truck would appear loaded with melons or fish. The fish was whitebait, which covers a multitude of sins but not anchovies.

The only mention of anchovies in my Greek cookery book says "Anchovies reach the table either in long strips or sometimes beaten to a puree." I can find no mention of it anywhere else, certainly not in the recipes.

The only first and only time we ever had anchovies was on a pizza, so I always assumed anchovies were more of an Italian "thing". I certainly didn't like them then (too salty), and certainly can't eat them now.

I would hope someone likes anchovies tries them on a Greek stryle salad to see why it's popular here.. The flavor works in a classic Ceasar salad which also has cheese, so why not with another salad.
