What did you cook or eat today (April 2025)?

I get you on the hot dogs and bologna, UPF's for sure. I like the flavor of Vienna Sausages and endeavored one time to make some. They were like hot dog sized and tasted great and *didn't* look, or have the mouthfeel, of extruded meat whiz. I should make some more.
Was it you that posted a photo of that vat of mystery meat paste that they make the hot dogs out of? I saw that on this site somewhere awhile back.

They sell the bones? Add enough cajun spice to anything and it will cover it up nicely. I love red beans and rice!

I will buy a bone in smoked ham from the grocer and section it up and freeze it for soup. I love ham and bean soup!
Yes they sell the bones. You have to look for the floor freezer they've got tucked away. I have been in stores where you have to ask and they have them in the freezer behind the counter. They're generally around $6 and still have a good bit of meat left on them. The bones have, to date, always fit in my 3 qt. IP.

Don't recall but it could've been the vat they're growing chicken meat in. Looks like chicken, smells like chicken...

Yeah I don't have an IP but I have a 5 quart crockpot that I have always used. I like to buy these hams at the holidays when they are on sale. Right now Giant Eagle has them for .69 cents a pound.

No, it was hot dog paste. I remember that much clearly.

Edit: found it. It was SandwichShortOfAPicnic that posted it.
How to ruin a hot dog!!

It's a great reminder to not eat them. But if you get enough beer in me and I am at a baseball game, I might stray...
I like them.
I don't have a problem with mechanically recovered meat.
Most of us strip every bit of meat and goodness out of a carcass right down to bothering to boil the bones, it's not a lot different, it's not wasteful and I appreciate that.
Is there much difference between that and paté or any smooth meat paste?
..well apart from the E numbers and emulsifiers and.. and.. and..:laugh::laugh:

Ah, yes I am sure there is not much difference, but I don't like pate or, errr, meat paste--my mom used to eat that potted meat stuff and that pureed chicken stuff in a can. I tried it and am not tempted to do that again, so there you go! I do like bone broth and stock made from a carcass and I don't mind making a soup that way. The thing is, I know exactly what is in it, and there are no hearts, livers, kidneys, or tongues in it. And I am not going to puree it when I am done stripping that meat off the carcass!

Dinner today was all day simmered trotters with turmeric rice and fried okra. The okra was an experiment since after I detailed the stove I wanted fried food. I cooked in the air fryer at 350 °F for five minutes then 390 °F for two minutes then put in the hot oil. Swirled around with the lid on for two minutes and done with *no splatter* on the stove. 👍
