I always thought they were the same, having eaten skate on occasion in chippies in London, but I Googled just now and while they are very very close and to most untrained eyes appear almost identical, Ichthyologists (fish scientists) classify them differently. Aside from minor anatomical details, the biggest difference seems that stingrays have a venomous spine (the thing that killed Steve Irwin) while skates do not.

I think for cooking purposes though they are interchangeable.
 
Diner at Dils. Gilt head bream baked in pine nut crust, lamb braised with stuffed aubergine courgette and peppers, rice nuts and bean pilaf, various dips and sauce. Pud was some sort of not soaked baklava. It was amazing, double amazing as he is having a root canal finished this morning. Kurds are very tough people

Today I'm cooking belado fish, belado fish is a typical Indonesian cuisine, since I am Indonesian, its spicy taste is very appetizing
