What did you cook or eat today (December 2021)?

The non-cooks usually don't notice.

I make sure everything and I mean everything except one cast iron skillet I sometimes use, goes into the dishwasher as soon as its been used as I'm cooking and prepping. So no real clearing up. I used to stay with a friend and cook for him and he had no dishwasher. I ended up leaving all the evening meal stuff to the following morning to wash up. I simply couldn't face it after eating a good meal. To be fair, he often did the washing up the next morning.

I do both. About the only thing MrsT does in the kitchen is empty the dishwasher.

I clean as I go about 50% of the time, it just depends on the recipe. I'm rather forgetful and if I'm jumping from one thing to the other, I'm likely going to forget something or skip ahead three steps.

Otherwise, I just do the cleaning up sometime between finishing eating and starting the next meal. I have to have everything clean before I can start cooking.

Last meal of the day, I usually do the dishes just before I go to bed at 10PM or so.

I recall this whole issue of when to clean up dishes discussed before, recently. But again, for my 2 cents, I try to clean up as soon as possible after the meal and sometimes, clean some dishes while still prepping and cooking. There may be some times where I may soak something overnight, but not often.

I don't get to clean as I go unless hubby is at work when I cook, by which I mean in the city, not the study. if he's at home in the study, literally on the hour every hour he will come out and wash up whilst the kettle is boiling for his next herbal tea.
there is a historical reason for him doing the dishes not me. when I was 19 years old I had an accident at work (their fault) but it left me with grip issues, usage issues and feeling issues in the left wrist, not to mention it dislocating 20-30 times a day. I was at the time left handed. I spent my final year at uni going to hospital 3 mornings a week and learning to write with my right hand. luckily for me the University went out of their way to help me out and I was able to graduate with the expected grade.

however the ongoing issues with the wrist lasted 15 years and to a degree are still here. one of them is that it spent 13 years in plaster (or equivalent, I had a hard support that I could remove, but it was effectively in plaster for all of that time), which couldn't be got wet. however that wasn't the biggest problem. I can actually only tell that I'm holding something, not how hard I'm holding it (unless I break it, which I've done before now). after my 2nd year with it in the support I had broken an entire 12 place fine bone China (wild strawberry pattern) Wedgwood dinner service. my grandmother used to work as a secretary there and was secretary to the big boss when she retired. all 4 grandchildren got an 12 place dinner service in a pattern of their choice including cookwear

so what with my inability to hold onto something ordinarily, coating it with soap and expecting me to be able to hold it just wasn't a valid option... so hubby does the dishes, that way we actually have some to wash...

I wanted to add a (kind of) funny story that those of you who have spouses who don't cook or clean can appreciate: usually when I cook, I clean as I go, so after dinner there is a minimal amount of plates, pots, flatware, etc. to wash. Last night I didn't do that, which I can't remember the last time I didn't wash up while prepping food and I don't know why I didn't do that last night. But it was a 3-course meal with first the shrimp cocktail, mussels immediately afterwards, and then the lobster over pasta in rapid succession and I was really hungry (I didn't eat breakfast or lunch yesterday, not even a snack).

After we finished eating there were piles of dishes, cutting mats, knives, etc. and my husband was shocked. He said, "Where did all of these dirty dishes come from?" I told him it was a fairly normal amount of dishes and pans for what we ate, and he looked at me skeptically and said, "No way." I assured him that it was, explaining how we usually separated 1st and 2nd courses with much more time in between and if he was hanging out in the dining area looking at his phone or texting with someone, he apparently didn't notice me rapidly cleaning and putting a dent in unwashed cookware and such, or he was watching TV in the other room and was completely unaware of what I was doing. He said, "Wow, it seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through for meals." I was thinking in my head that I have been doing this for 22 years and he just figured it out. I think I got some well-deserved appreciation above how good things taste that I make. About time.

We have unwritten rule of I cook, wife cleans up. Although Sundays after kids go home I can do up to 3 loads in dishwasher. And restack shelves. All while wife sits upstairs watching tv or on the net. Suits me because I make a mess in the kitchen. :)

I have some things that I will not put in the dishwasher: like any of my pots and pans or knives, and anything I am going to need immediately to cook something else, I don't want to wait for it to run through the dishwasher cycle.

I guess your wife knows how to properly clean up. Hubby has offered and tried more than once, but I usually end up redoing it, so why bother? He is really good at taking out the trash and I am really good at putting stuff in it. I won't clean the gutters or blow the leaves or mow the grass, even though I know how. So it's really just fine with me.

Weve both done commercial cleaning at some stage. My second job at 17 was cleaning office blocks, top to bottom. Toilets included.

We aren't afraid of hard work.

He worked in restaurant kitchens when he was a teenager, and I am sure he washed dishes. Glad I never ate there, LOL!
