What did you cook or eat today (July 2023)?

It was 95F last I looked. I stopped looking. Ordered a steak, fries, salad, and mushrooms from my favorite steak place. Shared that with DD. Maybe some mint chip ice cream later.
Yeah it cooled down from 100 to about 94. I just had a sanwich with steak, peppers, mushrooms, onions and white cheddar. Gonna be 99 tomorrow then 101 Saturday and Sunday. Staying inside!

Chicken stir fry and roasted potatoes with garlic, thyme and rosemary tossed in ranch dressing powder.

Earlier I made the base for a salad with some romaine and red (purple) cabbage. I also baked some bacon in the oven with parchment paper to use for a topping. Never got around to adding the rest of the salad veggies and felt like it was more than I wanted to eat anyway so I put in the refrigerator.

About 30 minutes ago I got the hankering for a BLT but again, didn't want to eat very much, so I sliced 4 thin pieces of baguette and toasted them for mini BLTs. Perfect little 2-3 bite sandwiches. I used some of the chopped romaine and cabbage from my salad. I like mayo and mustard on mine:

I read posts about how awful grocery store tomatoes are: watery, mushy, flavorless, etc. I tend to chose firm roma tomatoes and let them ripen on my counter (SILs counter this time). The tomato on my BLT was purchased at Kroger 9 days ago and when I cut it tonight it was perfect--firm, not watery, fragrant and flavorful.

In the grocery stores here you can get the cheapo tomatoes (which you'll be lucky if they're even fully red) that are about $2 a kilo and totally flavourless mush or you can pay sky-high prices of $10-12 for 5-700g of some nice fat heirloom tomatoes that actually taste of something, or some on-the-vine ones from France. I'm lucky that there's a wet market near me though - there seems to be a glut of delicious cherry tomatoes (maybe from Aus?) at the moment so I can get them at half the price there as what the supermarkets will charge.

Yup, those were the cheapo tomatoes I bought. Firm and pink, because if one tries to select ripe ones they will be watery, flavorless mush indeed. I bought them knowing I wouldn't be using them for a week or more. I think I paid .77 cents a lb. Yes, there were more expensive cherry, grape, and heirloom tomatoes available, but I think they are too watery, even if the flavor is good. I like a roma because it tends to dry out a bit as it ripens. I've had really good luck with those as more often than not they turn out like the one in my photo.

When I get home to Ohio on the 24th I'll have fresh garden tomatoes to eat!

Here's the pot roast that I just finished slow cooking overnight!! Just made the gravy to it after adding the potatoes & carrots!! Enjoy!!! I'll cook some rice to go with it a little later.
I've just finished vacuum sealing the rest of it & I put it in the freezer so that the next time that I get a taste for pot roast, it' already cooked & in the freezer, instead of eating it all week!!! Hah!! :whistling:
