I remember as a very young boy up North calling it lunchmeat.
That’s one thing that I miss from my youth - up until the late-70’s, you could pull into any podunk little mom-and-pop grocery and they’d make sandwiches. You’d say, “a little of this, a couple of slices of that,” and get the best sandwich you ever had.

There are still a few places that do that around here, but they’re largely gone.

There is a place in Port Arthur called Amuny's that makes deli po-boys. Back in high school, it was a popular place to buy lunch. Oh, Amuny's is a liquor store. At noon on weekdays, it was full of HS students buying po-boys, chips and sodas. I don't think that is legal anymore.

As of a few years ago, it was still there, and still sold po-boys.
