Went to my favourite grocers today, they always have a wide range of interesting things to try but the downside is rarely know what you'll be taking home.

Black tomatoes, candy beets and watermelon radish... now just need to work out what to do with them

Yeah, I suppose you are right now that I think of it, 4" is rather small. I just had to pull out my tape measure and look. I don't think I have ever measured an avocado before, LOL. Still weird that I can get them all the way up here in NE Ohio for $1 and you are paying the same in AZ, when you are so much closer to the Mexico border and California.

Years ago I had a huge avocado we ate that was so bland and watery I always decided to stick with smaller ones after that. I have never tried one from HI but I don't suppose they export much of any produce from HI. Even pineapples I buy typically come from Mexico.
The shipping cost is out of this world expensive, no not much goes out ... well other than fish to Japan and Macadamia nuts, forgot those.

OOOOH I love macadamia nuts!

I didn't think it necessarily had a lot to do with shipping costs, I just figured that there were enough people in the islands who wanted to eat them, and in the US Mexican imports are inexpensive (and still quite delicious).

Back home, I never ate Mac nuts, we just took them with us when we'd go see relatives on the mainland.
On one trip, we were going to visiting/staying with multiple people, so I thought it prudent to mail boxes of chocolate covered Mac Nuts ahead of us to my BIL's house-stay #1.
I sent 12 boxes wrapped up in heavy brown paper and tied together with strong twine (`member that?).
When we got to their house, I only had ONE box!!

Yeah, I always loved shopping at Sprouts in Phoenix when visiting my cousin and aunt. I remember them being on sale 3/$1, but that was several years ago and I am sure that with inflation they are just more expensive now. Also, that's a pretty darned big avo. The ones I got 3/$1 were much smaller. But it looks perfectly ripe. I always just have to remember to put the leftover half in my direct line of eyesight in the refrigerator so I remember to eat it before it possibly goes brown.

Inflation and politics/crime. The Mexican avocado market is mostly controlled by the drug cartels. The US suspended avocado imports from Mexico a few weeks ago because US food inspectors were being threatened by the cartels.

I read that too, so sad.
I'm glad that I went to my favorite Taqueria a few weeks back and took home probably my last pint of Guacamole for a while :(

A side note: that puny Avo I bought today ... tasteless!

Hey, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. When life gives you bland avocados, you make guacamole. True story! Seriously, it's the only way to salvage it, adding red onion, cilantro, jalapeños, lime, and salt.

Sounds as if you're like me - pick things that look good and work out later how to use them! Obviously, you could make a rather pretty salad with those ingredients.

Today I bought regular hamburger buns, brioche buns, a jar of capers, quart of heavy cream, onions, bananas, cream cheese, a loaf of white bread and a large jar of peanut butter (to make peanut butter sandwiches for the squirrels) and three 18-packs of eggs. Yeah, those eggs will last 2-3 weeks depending on what I do with them. Hubby usually has 3 everyday for breakfast and of course I use them in various recipes. Plus I will boil some for him to have as a snack in the afternoons. And I might have 1 with a piece of toast or half an English muffin every few days.

One of the last things I bought in Kroger, while I was in Cinci, was an Amish Blue Cheese. It looked good, but taste-wise:
-3/10. It was really dreadful.
