What produce/ingredients did you buy or obtain today (2024)?

I don't think you really get it anywhere else.
I didn't even know about it when I lived in Zimbabwe...
It's a common tree in the low lying areas in Zim and Zam though

I love papaya!
What kind of fruit is Masau?
I too adore papaya. I love it on pancakes or French toast:

I love papaya ( or lechosa, as it's called here), but only when it's perfectly ripe. It's delicious on it's own, with some yoghurt, or zapped to make a drink - with orange juice, perhaps.
The seeds ( which we usually throw away) are peppery, and whizzed with some red onion, Evoo, a pinch of sugar and a bit of vinegar, make a delicious salad dressing.

You can use the green ones for pickles and of course som tam (Thai green papaya salad, absolutely delicious)

Went to the farmer's market today. They have trading partners up north since growing seasons are basically reversed for us.

Top picture left is fresh/spring garlic. Basically, the whole plant is usable. The green stem is used like leeks. The garlic cloves inside are small since the bulb is not fully grown. The membranes around the cloves can be cooked in EVOO into a butter like spread. The taste is supposed to be mild. Never had these but thought I'd give them a try since they were available.

Second picture top left, across, new yellow potatoes, granny Smith apples, watercress. Next down from left, mushrooms and a zucchini. Bottom left across endive, sugar snap peas, asparagus.

Everything above is going in a garlic dish. We got other produce, as well, at regular grocery, but I'm not taking a picture of that.

Oops, there's an avocado between the apples and zucchini. It's in shadow, and is dark to begin with, so you can barely see it.

That's where the green garlic powder stems from.

Using the entire plant often features in Chinese cuisine.

We went to our beloved Zippy's Restaurant this afternoon and I got this

barrel chili.jpg

This is a "Barrel Chili".
It's 14 servings and weighs in at a whopping 7pounds/3.175kg.
I plan on dividing this up into portion sizes and into freezer bags for the flight back to Cowboyville Arizona in my checked luggage.
DH was none too happy about this, "I thought we agreed that you weren't going to bring back any food items. I'm just not into this!"
Well, first off, it's my concern and I'll take care of this. PLUS you'll benefit from this too DH!

It is cherry season here. There was catchy inspiration in an article I ran into. Using cherry for sauce. The dishes described are on offer in a coastal town locally during the Cherry festival they hold. Oh yes, the 10m long cherry strudel...cool!
So perhaps will buy cherries. The one was a sauce over mashed potatoes, the other I forget...
Let me see if I can find the screenshots.

We went to my favorite Japanese "dollar store" today.
My Haul:

I found these microwavable larger Shoyu dishes, great for a small snack item.
We have here two different sized aluminum side dish cups (meant for making Bento Boxes, which is what I basically make for my Mother).
I'd never seen square silicone cups, great again for making up freezable heat `n eat meals for Mom.
The next row is adorable stickers that I intend to use on the plain brown paper bags I send over to my Neighborhood Gal Pals with goodies in them, I thought this was a cute idea.
Appetizer bamboo skewers, I think their the perfect size.
This I thought would be great for me. I have a bottle of water with me when I go out & about, this would be helpful.
Oh, that Botan Rice Candy is a childhood favorite, I had to have it.
