How is the corona virus affecting you?

New restriction measures are being put in place here in Portugal. One of the new measures forbids shops for doing sales, to avoid people gathering in stores. I'm saying farewell to the Zara clothes I had been eyeing

On a positive note, number of infections, hospitalizations and deaths are a lot lower than we had last winter, so at least the vaccines are doing their work

I'm experiencing it now. I'm wondering if I should get a Covid test tomorrow, before traveling to Houston for Christmas with family. I am taking my temperature a few times a day, and so far, nothing unusual. I am pretty much controlling the symptoms of sneezing, runny nose and cough with over-the-counter meds.

CD
Definitely get a test....better safe than sorry!

We both had a cold last week, but because the symptoms of the latest variant are very similar to colds (runny nose, sneezing, etc.) we've been doing daily lateral flow tests just in case. We're both better now, but we'll still do a test tomorrow morning before travelling up to see my family for Christmas.

healthcare workers (especially the doctors) who won't get vaccinated. Ridiculous, right?
So, according to the AMA, I just found this out, 96% of Doctors are vaccinated. So when you look at Doctors they might know something that the general population doesn't. The general population and Doctors can't weed out misinformation very well or at all or the political divide and subsequent bias, or lack of transparency and honesty from the powers that be etc, but what they the Doctors can do is parse out the data, which they have and almost unanimously decided to get vaccinated. If that doesn't tell you where to put your money, then your just an idiot, and you can't fix stupid. The only unvaccinated argument I would give some leniency toward would be a person with natural immunity, that I believe deserves a further conversation.

The only thing I didn't like was that he said that young people and children typically don't get as sick. That would lead a lot of young-er people to think they don't need to worry about getting vaccinated.
In the context of how to mitigate another 400 thousands deaths he mentioned that people shouldn't worry about kids, is that what your talking about? Well, in general the odds are minuscule that the under 20 demographic will encounter severe disease or death unless there is comorbidity and he was basically talking about priorities in general and not really about children or young people. Also I'm thinking and this is just a guess that most young people already know their chances of hospitalization or worse without an adult having to tell them. Cheers.

Many young people in the USA are so full of misinformation. They get their information from Facebook and other social media and a lot of it just isn't true. My oldest stepdaughter is convinced that the vaccine is more dangerous than getting covid. Her husband's family has brainwashed her. She's not the only one in her age demographic that believes stuff she reads from social media posts.

What I mean is, a quick look at covid data for Ontario website for example shows the chances of serious disease and death and in the under 20, is basically non existent and it's been available for 2 years now, and I suspect not all kids are as stupid as most adults think. Of course in the big picture in Ontario it's been crickets as far as transparency or data in general.....the message is the virus will kill you and get vaccinated but I suspect and talking with 2 students in my social group that were quite aware of the Ontario data for a long time and eventually this info gets out in the population and when I talk to anyone about covid in general it's accepted that kids are pretty much in the least effected demographic. I guess there are some that aren't aware but anecdotally I've never met one. Of course this is only my experience in Ontario Canada, but I'm sure there are some young people that are easily manipulated to believe just about anything, and I know this because they grow up and become adults, and some seem to be running our country.

Here in Portugal children started being vaccinated last weekend. Children don't commonly get very sick with covid but they're able to spread the disease. Since the beginning of the pandemic there were 30 kids in the Covid ICU here in Portugal (we're a country of 10M people).

Canada recently rolled out vaccines for the 5-11 age groups.

Same here, it's for children 5 to 11.

We're getting record numbers of new infections, almost 9000 new infections today, but hospitalizations and deaths are lot lower than last winter (we had less new infections but the daily death numbers were up in the 300s...now there are 11-20 something deaths per day).

Anyway I really look forward to the day this will become endemic and we can just all get on with our lives... People die of a variety of diseases everyday and we all get there one day... Can't wait to see Covid being managed as just another disease and not something that sends people home and has businesses close every time infections go up. And I am lucky, I have a stable job, I'm buying a house, I pay my bills, but I often think about people who work in restaurants and hospitality and those other businesses that have been terribly affected. If we all need to take an extra vaccine every year to keep this under control and go back to normal I'm good with it...

And I don't know if others notice the same, but I still find some people are ashamed to admit they get/got covid, like they got leprosy, and I can't understand why,it's just another illness and very common nowadays. People aren't ashamed to say they got the flu, so why do they feel ashamed of getting covid?
