How is the corona virus affecting you?

F.D.A. Clears Pfizer’s Covid Pill for High-Risk Patients 12 and Older

According to the New York Times, paxlovid will be available to both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

Quoted from the article:
"Tens of millions of Americans — including both vaccinated and unvaccinated people — will be eligible if they get infected with the virus. The treatment could be available within a few days."

Last week our government announced that we will have a "contention" week from January 2 to January 9, with schools and kindergardens closed and remote work becoming mandatory. A couple days ago they announced the contention week was expanded from Dec 25 to Jan 9. On top of that, people can only eat in restaurants if they have a negative covid test, regardless of their vaccination status, there are new limits to how many people can be inside stores (1 person per 5m2), all official New Year's eve celebrations were canceled, bars and clubs can't open on New Year's Eve, and of course, schools and kindergardens are closed are remote work is mandatory when possible. This is not what we were told to expect once we were all vaccinated.

On a good note, around 77k children were already vaccinated since children's vaccination started a week ago or so, and booster shots are being swiftly administered. Health personnel all got their booster shots along with people over 50. My boyfriend is 29 and was vaccinated with the Johnson vaccine back in August and he already got his booster shot - less than 6 months after getting his first shot.

I am still clueless as to when we will be allowed to resume our normal lives. They told us vaccines would allow that, clearly they did not. Maybe now we need new treatments instead of new vaccines? Maybe we need more vaccines? Maybe it's getting 3 shots per year instead of 2? Whatever it is I'm fine with it.

I'm leaning towards a modified vaccine for each mutation. I'm a bit worried about side-effects from pills, not worried about the safety of the vaccines, but it makes sense it will be like getting a modified flu shot every year (or more frequently) to combat a new flu strain. The mRNA technology should make that easier for them to accomplish.

Really glad that parents are vaccinating kids in your country. About half of the people I know with children have vaxxed their kids and there are a lot of people in the US who won't.

But she had delta. She's not boosted yet. She drives a school bus and thinks that's where she got covid. She will probably end up getting omicron at some point.

It's my in-laws I worry about, especially MIL.

Oh, I get it. Again I blame the powers that be that have totally neglected being up front and transparent during this
If a person has been double vaxxed and has had a breakthrough infection, in other words has been infected, then it doesn't look any better than that as far as protection is concerned.

Breakthrough infections generate ‘super immunity’ to COVID-19, study suggests
Longitudinal analysis shows durable and broad immune memory after SARS-CoV-2 infection with persisting antibody responses and memory B and T cells

I couldn't read the New York Times article but have read otherwise. If it does allow for breakthrough cases I'm not quite sure why it would be administered, anyway I'll take another look.

It's available for people who are at risk for severe disease.

Sorry my link doesn't work. I'm able to view it, hmmm...

Oh, and my friend is heavy and at risk, her sister died at 37 from a congenital heart problem, I don't remember all the details (other than tragically sad), but my friend has high blood pressure (controlled by medication) and it's worrisome.

Lets hope people aren't at risk of severe disease after being double vaxxed.

It sounds like she's not quite sure if she actually was infected and I just want to mention that it's not recommended that people that had breakthrough infection be boosted right away, and it wasn't a good side effect, too much activity for the immune system to handle at one time......you might want to research that Jas but i do remember a few months back reading that.

My friend is a bus driver who works for the school system. She had Covid-19, she was tested. It was in September, 3 months ago. I'd say she could probably get boosted if she wanted to, not my call.

My MIL has been double vaxxed and boosted but is still at risk, there are many elderly people and immunocompromised people who are at risk. MIL's doctor told her to remain cautious as she may not be maintaining antibodies, told her to stay masked up, avoid public places, etc.

Like with every new disease weird, incomprehensible things are happening...I know someone who was infected twice in the span of 2 -3 months, she was double vaccinated, and this was long before omicron was around...one of the times she was infected she had neurological complications (that she recovered from since). She said she got tested in her hospital and apparently her body didn't create antibodies after the 1st infection 🤷‍♀️ she still had antibodies from the vaccine though. Medicine isn't a linear science like a lot of people think...a lot of weird things defy medical knowledge.

Anyway I know two people who tested positive recently and that's the sad part, spending Christmas in isolation. One of my friends has 2 small children and will spend Christmas isolated in her bedroom, that's absolutely heartbreaking.

Indeed. I'm glad your friend's neurological issues went away.

And so sad for your friend at Christmas, thank goodness for technology, they can zoom or duo/FaceTime from another room perhaps.

I have a friend who's mother died of covid in a nursing home in the summer of 2020. My friend was allowed to be with her when she died, but then had to be quarantined and couldn't go to the funeral.

I need to go make cookies and quit talking about this!

Edit: I went into the kitchen and started unloading the dishwasher and getting stuff out to make cookies and hubby informed me he thinks he is developing a migraine, so loud noises are out for awhile, possibly the remainder of the day.

When I do bake the cookies, they will be these, but I am going to add some macadamia nuts to mine:

In Ontario where I live we just broke the all time daily case count of 5790.
971 are unvaccinated.
222 partially vaccinated.
4392 were double vaccinated.
20 hospitalized with 1 going into ICU.
Today there was 2 less on ventilators.
A total of 444 patients in hospital with covid. from a population of 15 million.
A total of 169 in ICU
101 on ventilators.
In the last 2 weeks there's been 13 more people in ICU
7 deaths down 2 from yesterday and these will be from Delta still.

It's freak out time in Ontario. I expect more mitigation soon, just because.

Those cookies look lovely! Love the colors 😍

garlichead apparently the negative covid tests to eat in restaurants are only required from Dec 24 to Jan 2, but, it wouldn't surprise me to see this new rule being extended. Anyway, me and the boyfriend are dining out today to enjoy the last day when we can eat out without violating our nostrils.

Have a great dinner out. I just heard Spain is mandating that masks will need to be worn outside, and also there's no more need for the double vaxxed to isolate if a person comes into contact with someone that has covid. It's a weird world when people in power have their brains fall out during trying times. j/k.
