The name Frederick Hibbert might not mean a lot to many people, but if we say "Toots of Toots and the Maytals" we should get a few more sparks of recognition.

'Toots' died on Friday, aged 77. Toots and the Maytals got me into reggae in the late 1970s, when I was into punk. It was hearing stuff like Monkey Man and Pressure Drop, both Toots' songs covered respectively by the Specials and the Clash that led me to explore the originals.

I was glad I did. The whole thing set me off in pursuit of British reggae bands like Steel Pulse, Black Slate and the brilliant Misty In Roots. Punky reggae party? You bet!

Duck59 I’m not big into reggae but spend my teenage years listening to Sublime and have grown to like some other punk ska bands (Sublime is still my favorite band though). Sublime actually got me into some reggae and “54-46 That’s My Number” is one of my favorite reggae songs.

Have you read Alexander McCall Smith? On the Isabel Dalhousie series she says if you live in Scotland you must have the right attitude to rain, which is to be content that it’s raining.
No, is the simple answer.

My partner Catherine hails from Cork. The rule there is that if you can't see the Cork and Kerry mountains, it's raining. If you can see them, it's going to rain.

It was warm, but breezy today. Rather nice.

I've been hearing geese fly over the house on their way South. They stop at a small lake a few blocks from me, so they are pretty low when they fly over.

We get quite a few skeins of geese flying over around this time of year. I couldn't say exactly where they come from, but I'd imagine we see birds that have spent the summer around the Orkney and Shetland Isles as well as Iceland and perhaps Scandinavia. They always head in a south-westerly direction and I imagine a good many are heading for Caerlaverock, a wetlands reserve in the south-west of Scotland on the Solway Firth.

Solway Firth.
When I was a kid my Dad bought a summer cottage at the end of a road near Carsethorn. It was next to the beach. When the tide came in, crazy brave locals would stand against the tide with Haaf nets catching salmon. My Dad would pay them whatever they wanted for a fish over 12 lbs. Anyone who has had the privilege of eating a poached salmon like that will understand why it is the best in the world.

Psycho-poodle has a Tropical Storm, soon to be a Hurricane, named after him. You don't want to be where that one hits.
