The General Chat Thread (2024)

If it helps, it's 2°C here and has been since 4pm. It will be until the morning (about 8am). I've a fire lit, but this end if the house doesn't benefit from it and a fully tiled (floor included) bathroom is very cold. It was a woolly hat and gloves job this morning.
 
And they're predicting snow on Friday above 1200m. So I won't see that.

Indeed. As well as the Sun. Apparently we are at the peak of an 11 year sun cycle, plus a strong sun erruption.
The ozone hole does not help, surely...pollution and man made waste on all scales is horrible, but there are larger cycles...
I love reading on those subjects.
Apparently one can trace the sun cycles within the lines of tree trunks...

Science evolves and changes over time as our understanding of systems gets better. The earth’s climate system is incredibly complex and there are so many different factors at play. Temperature records keep getting broken year after year, and records show that the planet is undeniably warming. There’s a good comic here from xkcd that illustrates it: Earth temperature timeline

All of the stuff about earth cycles is really cool and fun to learn about.

An interesting thing about the ozone hole is that it’s actually shrinking! Since the Montreal Protocol phased out the use of CFC refrigerants, the hole in the ozone layer is starting to repair itself. It’s super cool how the earth’s systems can be so resilient. (But please still wear sunscreen, especially our friends down under!)
