I wish I felt as confident that if it is the case he believes its backfired, its a good thing. Its possible he will blame Western ideology and possibly take further devastating actions. He isn't thinking in the same way we think. The fact his troops have fired on civilians, including children is testimony to that.

Sadly he is getting noticeable support in Russia, they have their own version of MAGA where they get to displace all their failings, blame 'the others' and rally behind an unsuitable leader because he feeds their prejudices.

Oh don´t worry about that. He´s a pathetic so-called socialist (which he´s not) who believes that he´s actually doing something positive for the Ukranian people; liberating them from unbridled capitalism. Been there (Venezuela), done that.
Like all his ilk, killing innocent people is not a problem. It´s just part of the "solution" to make the population realise than "socialism" is the true path. Just like the Spanish Inquisition. Just like Pol Pot. Just like Ortega in Nicaragua. No freedom.

Well if that's how they feel, I do not feel sorry for the people of Russia for the sanctions being imposed on their country. But you know, people in North Korea feign support for Kim Jong-un. Whenever interviewed, people gush how wonderful he is, but I bet most don't really mean it and say it out of fear of repercussion.
I don't doubt there are horrible people in Russia who love Putin, but I would really find it hard to believe that it's the majority.

They are not the majority by a long way, that's why I draw the parallel to MAGA, they cause more disruption and embolden leaders more than they should, and their World view is skewed to reality.
I'm not disagreeing - except I'm not sure why we shouldn't therefore be worried. He is unpredictable and capable of doing unthinkable things if he chooses.
I still don't think Putin has a good grasp on reality. He has surrounded himself with yes-men, and and his mental health is not looking good. Does this look like a stable man?

It's a cunning plan, but it might just work.....
Not as good as his plan to drop a nuclear bomb in a hurricane to stop it, but better than his idea to inject people with disinfectant to kill Covid.
Sean Hannity at FOX had a similar idea to have some NATO country bomb Russian convoys in Ukraine at night, so Russia wouldn't know who did it --- or something like that.
On a serious note, I do have a better understanding of why establishing a no-fly zone over Ukraine could backfire. If a NATO aircraft, or worse, a US aircraft were to shoot down a Russian aircraft, which would more than likely happen, Putin would have his excuse to go ballistic. He could say "NATO started it," and with his clearly diminished mental stability, who knows where that could lead.
Did anyone see the photo op he did with the Russian Flight attendants? They were all young and pretty, and looking at their postures and facial expressions, one would think they were hostages, not guests.
