While on the plane, we met a woman from Galveston who said that the one good that came out of the pandemic was that it made her really appreciate her state. Texas is enormous, and I’m sure there’s a lot of things to see and do than drink Lonestar beer at the airport.
I really don't like Texas, and I don't understand how so many of my family members have stayed there all these years. Also amazed that my middle stepdaughter actually moved there, but Austin is a pretty cool city and has/had a fabulous music scene which I am sure will boomerang back soon, and there is some really amazing food there as well. But SE Texas is polluted and ugly.

BTW: Galveston is one of the ugliest beach towns I have ever seen. Brown sand, brown water, yuck.

Fush tacos enjoyed while listening to a ska version of Stevie Wonder’s “Always”. Next up a ska version of Bon Jovi’s “I’ll Be There for You”. Here’s the scene near where we ate:

Texas beaches are not pretty, due to the silt that comes out of the Mississippi river, and flows West in the Gulf. I've been 100 miles offshore to go fishing, and the water is beautiful.

And yes, SE Texas is full of oil refineries and chemical plants. But, go North into the East Texas Piney Woods, and there is some nice scenery.

The Texas Hill country around Austin and San Antonio is also very scenic. Great driver's roads. Fantastic BBQ!

Yes, in all fairness, there are parts of Texas I've never been to or parts I've not spent much time in. And yes, I'm aware of why the beaches are ugly. But even down around South Padre they aren't much better.

But the people are awesome!

The car made you do it, eh?

Sometime, when someone asks for money (and seems sane), buy them some take out food instead and sit down and eat with them. I did that once, and it turned out well. We ate on a curb and talked. He was very nice, but as we talked, I could tell he had some serious issues I couldn't deal with, and I have to admit I was uncomfortable at first, but I got to see him as human. As a man, I wanted to fix his problems, but I didn't know how. But, he had a good meal, and he was grateful -- plus, I got a good lesson in how my problems are not as bad as they could be. I hope he got the help he needed, and is doing okay today.

This guy was definitely a druggy, gaunt as and not looking sociable. I'll help anybody out but not a druggy who is after money. I could be wrong but I'm certain about this guy. Not interested in food. I watched him for a while, from my Car, he targeted middle aged small people, who scurried away as fast as possible. My last reaction with a homeless guy didn't end well for him. The police ended up taking him away. Also a druggy with mental health issues. And well known to police.

Do you get a chance to sit down and talk to the people you cook meals for? I would like to volunteer to cook at a "soup kitchen," as they are called here. But, I would like to sit down with some of the recipients and just talk with them. No agenda, just get to know them. If I can help them, great. If not, we had a pleasant meal together.

We take personally every Xmas to Salvation Army homeless shelter where they cook Xmas lunch for 100s of people. Last three years we took every year , 2 whole hams ( $140 ea) 10x iced Xmas cakes ( $20 ea) .
Salvation Army and Ronald McDonald house are regular recipients of our money and goods.
When our mum passed we rang the sallies, they got the whole house contents. Prolly $5k to $10k of stuff. Everything, they were good to us as kids.
