What did you cook or eat today (November 2023)?

I reckon sometimes if someone’s not really engaged with doing a job and theres a slightly easier way of doing it like cutting the veg larger they deviate for that brief moment then go back to dutifully following the instructions.
A bit of a “that’ll be alright” moment. Like they are doing a good job precisely following your instructions but not thinking at the same time.

Well thats how Mr SSOAP follows instructions. If I leave him to it with very vague instructions that it needs to be cooked a certain way he finds out how and does it well.

Anyway hope you get some food soon!!!

What I really just don't get is why with a Masters degree in Physics and Maths, he can't wrap his head around the fact that "larger lumps (of the same thing) take longer to cook" :o_o: . It's like he forgets the laws of physics still apply! 😆

He did apologise this morning and say he'll do better today. I pointed out that we're on something different for the next 2 days due to the 34°C that's forecast for this weekend. So it will be Monday before the test of the cauliflower and broccoli will get cooked. I expect he'll have forgotten by then, lol.

If you were to take an entire head of cauliflower, he would cut it into maybe 8-10 pieces, and 4 for the head of broccoli. I'd be cutting the same cauliflower into 40-50 pieces (including the stem). He'd serve 2 pieces each of the (still raw) cauliflower. I'd be serving 10-15 pieces each.

Quite a hot day here today for the end of spring. We hit 33°C but it was a humid 33°C.

Lunch was a huge bowl of fresh fruit along with homemade yoghurt and a good helping of raspberries fresh from the garden.

Evening meal was a cold soup (Recipe - Strawberry Gazpacho with a Lemon, Lime & Coriander Sauce), so yeah, more fruit, along with onion and red peppers.

Rather baffling I’d say.
But I find it even more baffling how many people serve something before checking its cooked. Doesn’t everyone on here give something a tap or poke or taste before deciding it’s ready?

I’ve lost track of how many times somethings been served to me by my husband or children (usually something cooked from frozen that’s supposed to be crispy) thats simply not done.
Even though I’ve explained multiple times you must check it’s cooked before serving and that - the instructions aren’t always right, the amount of food you put in there and the type of oven used all effects the cooking time.
I always hear the most vociferous protests “BUT I DID WHAT IT SAYS ON THE PACKET” 😆

I wouldn't mind so much if I then didn't have to offer comfort because it has to go back in the oven and they get annoyed 😂

Not sure if you cook drinks? Does heating it count? Anyway I have a lovely new bedtime drink.

I’m not a huge fan of cinnamon pudding things but Mr SSOAP is. He absolutely loves the pumpkin spiced lattes that come out at Christmas or a cinnamon whirl or doughnut.
We’ve tried the syrups but they aren’t great and the pumpkin spice mix isn’t really sold here.

I saw a recipe for Cinnamon milk and thought I‘d try it out in my hot chocolate maker (the machine is really sold as a latte coffee frother thingy but it makes amazing velvety hot chocolate) and now I’m a complete convert.
Making your own ‘pumkin’ spice mix is great!! Thanks ‘Merica! 😂

Yes it was so enjoyed its worthy of its own label 😆

In this recipe I did use the suggested maple syrup to sweeten and it was lovely.

Sounds good. DD loves pumpkin anything. Did you post the recipe or a link to the recipe?

I went to the winter fair earlier this week, and I finally got to eat a long-awaited apple dumpling. I usually get one every year, but it was the first one I’d had since 2019 (the fair was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, and then last year I was still on crutches and it was all I could do to hobble to the arena and watch the horse show).

You home and picking raspberries

My raspberries are only budding now.

Russ

Got round to cooking the Oxtail and Ox cheek that shouted to me from the meat counter last week.

IMG_1379.jpeg

Slow cooked it in a very rich stock that cubes of floury potatoes were then mashed into to thicken it.

IMG_1382.jpeg

Served it with a creme fraiche sauce I soured with some fresh lemon and flavoured with super strong horseradish to cut through the richness. Baked some bread (no pic of that soz) and rolled out the carpet with some lovely unpasteurised Normandy butter.

Loved it, will make it again but probably with a little more ox cheek and maybe just one piece of oxtail, it’s quite a lot to take on (she says wallowing on the sofa 😆).
The meat had to be removed at the end so I could adjust the sauce without destroying it but it was worth it.

I’m thinking my demented mum might enjoy it, it has that old school thing going on, I can imagine her mum making it for her.
Although probably nice and bland without the sweet smoked paprika, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce and honey 😂

Yeah, I know. Still sick as well sadly. Even hubby isn't getting over this bug.

Those raspberries really surprised me. I picked almost 750g of them and that was only the second 'harvest' from them. Earlier in the week I had about 250g from them. They have done really well this year. They were already flowering when I left for the UK. Now my strawberries on the other hand, are completely normal and only just starting to flower and fruit swell.
