The General Chat Thread (2024)

The custom in Venezuela is that everyone has a double-barrelled name. If Gabriela Hernández marries Juan Sánchez, then she becomes Gabriela Hernández de Sánchez. Their children, José and Amanda, will become José Sánchez Hernández and Amanda Sánchez Hernández.

Sounds logical to me!

Alright, so some of the old-school family members are in an uproar because my recently married youngest daughter kept her maiden name. Actually she and her fiance had talked about doing a hyphenated version for the both of them but decided it was easier to just keep their names as they were. They are both in their 30s (well actually DD is turning 30 next month) and it's their decision as adults. I am hearing flak about it and I told people to just let them do what they want to do, why should anyone else care?
Urgh!
I would have thought people had grown out of that by now!

I wanted to keep my maiden name, I didn't see the point of changing it, it harks back to women being chattel and as you can imagine that's really not my bag.
It didn't make any difference, people assumed I'd taken his name and everything was addressed to and put in his name regardless. It caused me more trouble than it was worth trying to keep my maiden name, but that was many moons ago.
I hope they have more luck nowadays!

As for the joining of two surnames, just no, don't do that to yourself! 😆
I have a long name and it's a total PITA filling in forms, spelling it out for people and my signature is an absurd squiggle because it can't accommodate the number of characters.

In Spain they often use both names and it results in a loft of daft repetition. Garcia Garcia is a common one, who wants to write their surname twice every time?

Yep - all the Spanish-speaking countries do the same.
There was a time, not too long ago, where high-class families would not only use their given surnames, but also those of their illustrious ancestors, so you'd get these pretentiously long hyphenated names to prove you had "class".
Maria Antonia Arismendi-Ceballos de Sánchez-Vegas. Try saying that with a mouthful of peanuts.

When I was looking for a place in Spain the woman I was corresponding with had four surnames! I don't even like writing the one long one I have!

Assuming there are a lot of different traditions, in the case of your youngest daughter, as you well pointed out, they can approach their surnames any way they want, is how I feel.

If I don't err, in the Netherlands, the husband can take his wife's surname?

Here too, in most cases wife takes husband's surname, but can co-join or keep only her maiden...as far as I am aware.

As long as they love, respect and support each other...

In my case, I always joked with my friends, my first husband's surname, which I took foregoing my maiden, had 5 letters, so exactly as short as my maiden surname.

I kept that surname after divorcing, to ease things off for my daughter, so we carry the same surname.

With my boyfriend, we agreed on me adding his surname to my now present surname, God's willing when we marry. It actually sounds lovely, it only has 3 letters, which makes my first name the longest with 6 letters😁😁...6-5-3... there is a diminution going on, and it's pronounced/written in a blink.😀

Texted a distant relative in Bulgaria.

He is roughly my age, maybe 5,6 y older.
His kids are now 18 and 15, young men.

Last time I saw their pics they were 5 and 2 or so...

An eyebrow lift truly. We always seem to wonder how fast kids grow.

Will print out the pics, to show my parents. It's too small on the phone for them.

Back to surnames and a bit of a laugh:
Generally in the Nethetlands women used to (or at least could opt to) have 2 surnames, husbands and their own.
As a result, a double surname was assumed to be female.
So at the airport: Spanish people being called via loudspeaker were always "missus" : please will missus Garcia da Silva report to counter blah blah blah
Whether male or female

double surname was assumed to be female.
That is funny😆but eventually they were told that it may be a Mr...?
Oh and have you heard of someone ,the husband actually taking the wife's surname?
Or was it just fairy tales that I remember...

I'm not sure but I know friends of mine kept their own surnames, but put the partner's under "married name".
Both him and her

Some of you may be confused, but we were not eating sushi in Düsseldorf at the Michelin starred restaurant. We were at a regular sushi store because the Michelin star restaurant had cancelled our booking because it was during their holiday. The booking site had made a mistake so we couldn't go.

Right now we're 30 mins from Rotterdam and an hour away from home 😊 it's my birthday today so we're probably going out for dinner later
